Hotel Deals forum getting slammed hard this morning with spammers. Several spam posts within the last couple hours.

IBgkim Mar 2, 2015 12:35 pm

They've all been banned. Thank you so much!

lo2e Mar 3, 2015 5:43 am

Hotel Deals slammed again - practically the whole first page of the forum is covered in spam.

Jaimito Cartero Mar 3, 2015 5:45 am

This is really annoying. It's hard to even look for new posts with so many spam messages.

I'd think some sort of program/filter could hold these suspicious messages.

lo2e Mar 3, 2015 7:47 am

MileageAddict, thanks for your work in cleaning that up. Not an easy task, I'm sure.

Is there a way, other than PMing you or hitting the red triangle in each spam post, to "rally the troops" to get it taken care of? I guess I'm asking if there is anyone else (IB, Senior Mods, etc.) that I should contact once I learn of such a spam attack? What can we, as members, do to help?

dimramon Mar 3, 2015 9:34 am

I received spam from the following "member":http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/members/domins.html

This is the message I got:

"HELLO
how are you today
My name is Miss Dominika
i saw your profile now
and i pick interest in you as friend to share important discussion with you as friend so contact me through my email addresses
([email protected]) or send me your own email for
picture and other discussion ok
i wait for your respond and have a nice day"

I monitor this thread and during my morning "clean-up" review I will look for any reported Spam. If I see it and the offender is still active, I will ban them and work with the other mods on getting it cleaned up.

So, thank you to all who are posting here; it does help.

IBgkim Mar 3, 2015 11:48 am

I've banned the IP addresses of the spammers of both MilesBuzz and Hotel Deals. Thank you so much for dealing with this.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

JDiver Mar 3, 2015 2:57 pm

Just to verify, this was a PM, not an e-mail?

Thank you. Now handled; you won't hear from this one again.

This is a good illustration of why FT puts PM limits on how many PMs per day can be sent out by new members. This person had zero posts, has all the earmarks of a scammer and was posting from a West African country known for such activities.

It seems they very active at night when the admins and mods are away. Wouldn't it be better to have some on duty at night? I realize spam is an everlasting problem, but I've never seen this level in my dozen years in FT.

Weheart is hitting a bunch of different fora: Travel Technology, Cruises, TravelBuzz,....

Uwug seems to prefer messing up the Hotel Deals forum.

I am wondering if there's a recent "improvement on spam technology" that helps this new wave of spam attack FT? Or perhaps our former infamous jpg spammer finally recruited his new army to test their new techniques on FT spam trap mechanism? It seems FT is vulnerable to either of the above approaches since they both get through the gate without setting off any alarm.

Nevertheless, my deepest sympathy to our MOD Squad, & thanks for getting the job done quickly! :)

Do the mods who volunteer for this get double overtime pay? :D

(For those who may not know, all FT Moderators are strictly volunteers; no remuneration is given.)

not really sure where to put this, so I'll dump it here: whomever is supplying the ads at the bottom of the forum pages (criteo.com/adchoices?) is throwing up one hell of a lot of malware ads at the moment. It's driving my security system nuts on every other page load for the last half hour or so.

Perhaps they need to pay someone a bit to babysit at night.

There are mods worldwide. Our own Information Desk has mods on the the west coast, the east coast, the east coast with a screwed-up sleep schedule ;), and Asia. I believe the Senior Moderator team (the team which is primarily responsible for moderating the unmoderated forums but who also have the ability to perform moderator actions across the entire board) have similarly global representation.

For those forums with a mostly U.S.-based moderator team, you can still report the post as normal, but if it's the middle of the night U.S. time, no one may be around to get the notification at that time. Perhaps the Senior Moderators should subscribe to email notifications from this thread and we can use this thread as a central reporting point for middle-of-the-night spam so they can be notified of it and assist in the quick clean-up? (I'm trying to think of solutions that can be implemented within the current forum software.)

New member raj77744 (or some similar username) is busy tonight posting phone numbers for what is apparently an Indian escort service.

He/she is now up to 40 threads, apparently all in Hotel Deals. Mysteriously, there are 44 posts, but I can't seem to find any of the posts that didn't start a thread. Maybe this means that someone is working on the problem.

ADDED: More than 50 threads now, and it's progressed from escorts to call girls. By number 75, it might be prostitutes and hookers at 100.

Thanks. Neither you nor any other member will be hearing from NineLives, though we hope the spammer won't return in another life. I'll ask IBgkim to delete this person's PMs.
