FT experimenting with banners down the SIDE of a thread now?

And I notice it's in Javascript to fool most adblockers, I understand the need to create revenue here but this severly influences the readbility of the thread when there is a 340*640 banner down the side of a post... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I immediately went to only Randy, but I should hove known the discussion would be here.

Scott, is the ad garbled or otherwise in need of technical support? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I think he means it scrunches the viewable thread text windown down to where it makes it uncomfortable to read FlyerTalk with such narrow margins.

And I agree!!

I hate these new sidebar ads!!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Scott, the ad code is the same that we use on the front page (http://www.flyertalk.com). That javascript is something our ad company has been using for a while. As for the 340x640 banner, when did you see that? The content space is coded for 120x600. I have noticed a couple times when the company has sent a horizontal banner into that space (probably an ad server problem), but it gets cutoff at the 120 mark.

My bad, it is indeed a 120*600. The code it uses is this:

<!-- SKYSCRAPER START -->
<!-- TF 120x600 JScript code -->

Then a bunch of code. Problem is that an adkiller only prevents the ad from loading but still leaves a big grey box on the right column in the topic listing and thread.

PremEx May 27, 2003 3:47 pm

I've only noticed it in OMNI and the Archives.

cblaisd May 27, 2003 5:52 pm

It's also in FT Airports

Well one more weirdo thing ocurring in OMNI is no big surprise surely? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Also now in Dining...

I too have started to see these "side ads" around here and there lately. Not as annoying as those massive 'Drug Free America' banners that hold up all pages from opening or posting, but it just adds to the difficulty of using FT in a hassle free manner lately. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Side banners are still in FT dining and FT airports. From FT airports I am also getting Expedia popups. An example:

And even worse (on my screen at least...)

side banners are now showing up on the individual fora (i.e. TravelBuzz!, OMNI, etc.) in FTTravel.

Please -- advertising IS NOT a tech issue. Advertising issues are not appropriate for discussion here.

Take advertising issues to Suggestions or to the Only Randy Forum.

Thank you.

At the start of this thread Dan claims the horizontal banners are an ad server problem, it's not about the ad in general, it's about the lack of readbility because of these ad's. If they are there on your request then my apologies for the complaint, but I gathered from Dan's post that they are not meant to be there like that. Take a look at this thread for an example of what it does to the page:

http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdi...ML/000055.html

When someone only posts 2 or 3 lines of text 75% of the screen is filled with black rectangles to fit the banner at the side...

The example you post is a tech problem and I thank you for bringing it to our attention.

My earlier post was simply to let people know that we know there are more ads on the site than there used to be -- the presence of ads is not a tech problem. Other issues -- like your example -- are definitely a tech problem.

That black area on that thread is something new to me. It could be just bad HTML-ing on my part; I'll check that template against the others to see. Thanks for the heads-up on that.

As for the big ad you mentioned at the beginning of this ad, that was something that appeared on your browser, but I couldn't dupe on mine. The ads down the right column are hardcoded to show up as 120x600. There definintely shouldn't be any 340*640 banners running here.

GG Jul 17, 2003 2:11 pm

The side ads are all over FT Miles as well (this changed from the last time I was on around 11am EDT). I don't get black boxes, however.

I usually use Mozilla as a browser - don't know if they're present with IE or not. This is the first time I've seen them, but they're highly annoying. I hope you guys will be able to make them behave.

Thanks.

I have a technical issue for the FT folks - if you are going to have these skyscraper ads, is it possible to "wrap" what appears below them to afford the normally-wide view at least BELOW the ads? Their presence cramps everything into a small, unreadable space even below where they appear - all the way down the page - and this seems unnecessary. Can this be fixed??

John at Webflyer Jul 18, 2003 10:41 am

No. We can not easily do this.
