certainly some posts disappeared (I know of my first 'Champagne-waste' topic that disappeared with 4 posted replies) - but that was a new topic from some hours before the crash - I don't know yet about older posts (but it seems that some links to 'older' posts don't work anymore).

The SECOND version of 'Thai Airlines LHR - BKK for £0!' started to fall apart while I posted on it. THAT thread was already a rebuild of posts from the original one. It vanished completely from Buzz front page as I tried to figger out the problem.

So I re-built a third version from posts visible to me before they too vanished:

Pretty strange for 2 threads on same topic to crash.

Interesting day.

I was posting on one thread in Mileage Run after I noticed that other forums were at 0. Apparently I was at Time Zero. Now, that thread appears to have vanished, and I lost most of my posting numbers. Am also wondering if the posts themselves and threads also completely vanished, or are just in limbo somewhere.

Looks like a variety of threads/posts disappeared. Might explain our drop in post numbers ozstamps!

SonOfACockroach May 6, 2003 1:50 pm

I've found posts of mine from well before the crash. It's interesting to see 0 on the post count though.

and ozstamps has just over 12000!

By the way, what happened to the Archives button--didn't there used to be one at the top of the page with Buzz, Dining, Travel etc.

I had the exact same thought yesterday as I was looking (in vain) for the UA $25 error fares to Europe thread. I thought advancing senility must have made me "think" that tab used to be atop every page. I needed to go back to www.flyertalk.com to get a link at top to use. Might have vanished in the melt down.

I made the same experience. I replied in the Holiday Inn/... Forum and the thread (about the low rate guarantee) is now gone. My post counter lost about 75% of the posts.

I am not techno minded, but perhaps John or Dan the webflyer tech whizzes may comment on this for myself, and the others affected by this recent (hopefully temporary) glitch in the system.

It is not only posts in the Archives (tabs are now back - thank you!) that show old post counts blondebomber. I just noticed a thread in THIS form I posted on a few weeks back still shows my post count at 13,555:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum72/HTML/000765.html

How is that possible if THIS post shows it 5000 or whatever less posts? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif

Glen, the post count in a thread (together with the profile etc...) get updated each time the thread is rewritten e.d. a new post is made to the thread. Looks like your post count is gone for good...

As for the reason behind it? I doubt anyone will know... It might be a restore of a backup of ONLY corrupt member files, it might be that UBB had the file cached or something...

I see that the post counter doesn't change until new posts to that thread so I know that I was at 7800+ posts just a couple of days ago.

This is a great metaphor for frequent flyer miles in general. Earn and burn, as Randy likes to say. While it might be a good idea in theory to save miles for one's retirement, they are too unstable a currency in the very long term, subject to devaluations, liquidations, and whatnot. (The short term or intermediate term is another story, where there is value in having "savings" to cover various contingencies.)

In the same manner, the meltdown serves as a reminder that he who places too great a store on post count may one day come up empty.

The topic heading, coming back to life reminds me of a Lenten retreat, and also serves as a metaphor for where our treasure truly should be.

We had some file problems that required us to revert to backups, which unfortunately messed up a lot of people's accounts. It seemed that only the threads that were being posted to during the corruption suffered the most. Although there was a little fallout on some other threads, it seemed pretty contained, all things considered.

We apologize for the post count changes on some member accounts; we've tried to restore what we could, but obviously there's a lot left out. Thanks for hanging in there...
