DigiChat 4.0

FlyerTalk Chat currently uses DigiChat 3.5.0.622, which has some problems when accessed from a Mac OS X system (scrollbars disappearing, etc.). Digi-Net claims their new v4.0 "fully supports" Mac OS X.

Press Release

Has anyone tried the newer software yet?

ozstamps Aug 22, 2002 7:16 pm

Speaking of chat I found it was weird in the past hour. Dropped me out after a couple of hours and now will not allow me back on claiming 'user ozstamps already logged on'. That has happened now and again before but always finally works. Rebooted computer and tried again just now. Same message. Used Netscape and IE. Anyone else getting strange things like that?

Yes, we upgraded our own chat servers with 4.0 today, EPS, you might want to test the chat on the www.digichat.com website, they are also running 4.0 and operate several chat rooms to test their products.

dan at WebFlyer Aug 23, 2002 9:11 am

We'll go check it out and see about upgrading...

UPDATE: We've been talking with DigiChat and they'll be upgrading our hosted chat early next week. They've said that there isn't any recoding necessary on our side, so the switch should be automatic when it happens. If anyone experiences login problems with the chat, let us know.

Any insight into which day this week Dan?

Just got a hang, and now not getting in at all. Looks like it is not too seamless for users.

dmfriedman Aug 28, 2002 12:18 am

I hate to say "me too", but, well, "me too". Can't get into chat at all, just hangs on the connect screen.

Catman Aug 28, 2002 1:15 am

Make that THREE.

I gave up after 10 minutes.

Dan, could you post a general message to all of us when it's fixed? Thanks for all of your work on FT technical stuff.

SanDiego1K Aug 28, 2002 8:21 am

There was an active chat session going on last night, when abruptly it terminated, dumping all of us. Two hours later, people were still unable to return to Chat. I just checked and was able to get in easily. Were we dumped at the point that the software upgrade occurred?

ScottC Aug 28, 2002 8:50 am

It's still the old version so it looks like a problem at Digichat caused it...

dan at WebFlyer Aug 28, 2002 12:44 pm

I spoke with DC this morning and they said that they should have all their hosted chats (such as ours) moved over to version 4 by this Friday. Last week they told me by this Monday, so who knows...

I had them reboot the chat environment to clear out some ghost accounts that were in there. It's probably going to be a little bumpy until they switch us all the way over...

ozstamps Aug 29, 2002 7:01 am

Has been pretty flakey in past 7 days or so. Lots of folks getting dumped with no notice by reports on chat.

Matthew Vandamm Aug 30, 2002 6:52 pm

Was dumped out of chat at 7pm MST 08/30. It took nearly 10 minutes to get back in.

Are we all on Version 4.0 yet?

Punki Aug 30, 2002 6:53 pm

I just got dumped. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

jan_az Aug 30, 2002 6:53 pm

A big me too ( or 10 or 20). This has been consistently flaky for the last 10 days or so

Jan

ozstamps Aug 30, 2002 7:04 pm

About ten of us all got dumped in the past hour at once, and at varying stages thereafter. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

It looks like we're still on the old version, even though we were supposed to be upgraded last week.

I'll check with DigiChat again...

UPDATE: I've just been told they're still testing their hosted servers and it will be another few days until they upgrade.

I see we now have version 4.0.2.0.

ozstamps Sep 13, 2002 12:09 am

Not sure about anyone else but private messages there are a bit of a hassle. Seems that a boxed message pops up on 50% of the typed reponses. Otherwise seems much the same, although today heaps of folks were getting booted off, much as usual. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

DigiChat may still be doing last minute testing... I just downloaded the new admin client for it, and it seems to function like the old one.

Let me know what types of problems you have with this new version. Try and be specific with your feedback, to make it easier for the techs at DigiChat to sort out. Thanks...

EPS Oct 10, 2002 3:47 pm

From today's MacInTouch:

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Digi-Net released DigiChat 4.0.3, an update of its Java-based chat system. The new version provides improved compatibility with Mac OS X 10.2.1, private messages for ChatMaster, enhancements to the Commander broadcast function, and other changes.</font>

SFOJFK Oct 10, 2002 6:41 pm

Today was the first time I've ever been prompted to load the IE_Client.cab. After letting it install, DigiChat doesn't come up and gives me the error:

An unknown error has occured while connecting to the DigiChat server. Please contact the administrator in charge of the site.

java.lang.Exception: HttpServlet address not specified

I haven't been on Chat since Monday Oct 7th. Just wondering if there were any changes and why my chat is dying out. I'm running Win2k IE Explorer 5.5

Randy was on chat starting 3 hours back.

Therefore 40,000 FT'ers are trying to log in I guess. I tried around 9 pm Eastern and zippo, since then. People must feel he knows something about flying and miles? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

It seemed to work fine for us, on Macs (os9, osX - NN / IE) and PC (Win98, NN / IE). If you're getting java exceptions, try rebooting your machine and clearing your cache. It could be that the particular Java version you have on your machine is buggy. We had about 50+ people in last night's chat, and all seemed to go well. It sure functions better from the admin side than the old one did.

SFOJFK, let me know if you continue to get those errors...

EPS Oct 11, 2002 10:53 pm

There has definitely been a change for the worse: the new applet is requesting "full permissions" (i.e. bypass all Java security mechanisms). No way am I going to grant that!

luftaom Oct 12, 2002 5:56 am

Upon attempting to log on I get a pop up window asking if I would like to install some somtware from Digi-Chat Corp. If I agree to the download it just hangs, but if I click no it just logs me on as per normal.

doc Oct 12, 2002 6:27 am

I understand your concern, EPS!

Ye I bit the bullet and went ahead! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

It took me a bit longer to log into Randy's special chat the other night!

Thanks, in any case, for trying to always improve matters for us Dan! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

It's happenning again. I've cleared my cache and even reinstalled IE 5.5. It worked fine on here before. I need some help.

Also, it appears that usernames with spaces in them get truncated after the first word. For instance, Jon Toner, was listed as "Jon" and Old Gold, came up simply as "Old". http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redface.gif

Stangely enough, "Randy Petersen" worked just fine, as did "x at WebFlyer".

FewMiles... it's a bug in Digichat. (Randy and Dan don't use the Digichat client to connect (they use the ChatMaster client), so it doesn't affect them).

dan at WebFlyer Oct 15, 2002 11:27 am

I'll get with DigiChat to see about the Java permissions issue...

DigiChat thinks that may be the verification message about trusting the signed certificate from them, which they recommend you do. I'm working on getting an unsigned version from them, which shouldn't require any action from you...

That may not actually be a DigiChat thing; it could be the script that we use to pass login information through FT records and into the chat (to verify that you're a registered FTer). I'll test that out...

I've added a tunneling applet to the login page to help out with that. DigiChat thinks you may be getting that error due to a firewall/proxy setting.

I've added the unsigned version of the login applet, which shouldn't require you to grant security permissions any more...

Yep, that was a script problem on our end; should be fixed and working properly now.

bump, it's happening again.... chat's full of

I
Jon
Village
etc....

Can you check the script?

dan at WebFlyer Nov 20, 2002 9:32 am

Yeah, I hosed it up again. I changed something else in the script and forgot to check for the whitespace thing. I've got it back to normal; let me know if it gives you any more problems.
