SEARCH IS NOT WORKING!

I just tried a search ... got back 503 results ... changed the search to only search the subject line ... got back the same 503 results ... changed the search completely (two completely different words, subject only), got back same 503 results ...

Maybe re-indexing will fix it, but it sounds like the new caching feature in the search is not working properly.

doc Aug 3, 1999 6:20 pm

Same problem persists.

MisterNice Aug 16, 1999 7:52 am

Hmmmmm. I just tried a search by "keyword". Got back zero results. Ditto for one for a "User Name". Anybody else getting this?

Efrem Aug 16, 1999 9:08 am

I got the usual "Please wait ... we are processing ..." message, then a blank screen, with Internet Explorer 4.5. I revved up an old copy of Netscape 3.0 and got a message that said "Document contains no data" when it should have been displaying results. I've used Search successfully in the past. Has anything changed recently?

Michael at WebFlyer Aug 16, 1999 7:16 pm

We're looking into this. We thought we had it licked last Friday but the problems seem to persist.

We did discover that the creator of our software/code seems to have created the search code to only return all occurences of postings in a given "topic" but not every "thread" that an individual may have on our bulletin board system. Very misleading and something we hope to rectify.

Thank you for your feedback.

Michael at WebFlyer- Thank you for your very prompt response. I continue to be amazed by the high quality of personnel at Webflyer. Kudos to you, again!!!

james Aug 17, 1999 1:50 pm

Thanks Michael - I was just about to post the smae problem (document contains no data).

Efrem Aug 18, 1999 10:34 am

Michael,

I haven't looked at the code, but it seems to me that if it was mistakenly searching a subset of the database, we'd get a reply screen with correct headers and footers and a message saying "nothing found" or some such instead of a list of posts. That's not what's happening. We're getting errors, content-free pages or blank screens. Maybe they should (also) be looking for something else.

pgupta011 Aug 18, 1999 10:58 am

Search has many problems:
1) sometimes it returns blank pages
2) sometimes it does not return some links which it should
3) sometimes it returns too many links - even ones which do not contain what you are looking for.

For example I tried to search for a word in Rudi's quiz, and asked it to look for that word in OMNI. it did not return back Rudi's posting.

Wildcarding and pattern matching would be a good feature (but missing). Another good feature would be the ability to search for a post which has WORD1 and WORD2.

Thank you all for your generous and patient responses. I can't tell you how much your support means to me.

We're still working on the search problem and this is because we've had to deal with the survey issues which I'm sure you've all heard about.

I'll keep you posted and take your feedback into consideration in solving the problem.

Michael: Just wanted to say, hang in there, take a few deep breaths, and keep on smiling http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

You guys do a great job keeping us talking to one another and we all appreciate it. Sounds like today is just one of those days.

MarkB Aug 21, 1999 6:19 am

Any news on the search problem? All I'm getting now is a blank page.

Punki Aug 21, 1999 10:02 am

Maybe everybody searching for answers to Rudi's Quiz has exhausted "Search" beyond recovery. http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

pgupta011 Aug 21, 1999 12:30 pm

Thats the good thing about computers - unlike humans they do not get tired.

I did uncover many subtelties of the search function playing around the first day with Rudi's quiz. Maybe Michael@WebFlyer should try to use the search feature to answer Rudi's quiz, and uncover the various bugs.

BTW - question #15 is self-referential.

QuantumLeap Aug 21, 1999 7:07 pm

I still get the "white screen" as well http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

JayFly Aug 21, 1999 8:41 pm

Michael, thanks for keeping at this http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gifwhile you deal with the survey simultaneously http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif. Search was working fine a few days ago, it was quick and seemed thorough, so you certainly can get it working again. Good luck to all of you struggling with it!

Punki Aug 26, 1999 6:37 am

Is there an update on the search function? I still getting "document contains no data." Is that what I should be getting at this this juncture?

kyklin Aug 26, 1999 10:18 am

Never had a problem with search(used Netscape 4.5 and IE5).

TribeFlyer Aug 26, 1999 4:17 pm

I searched on an exact name a few minutes ago and had no problems.

Baze Aug 26, 1999 4:22 pm

Seems to be hit or miss. If I search on anything other than a single word withing a single forum it does not work. I have IE5 on Windows98 platform.

pgupta011 Aug 26, 1999 9:15 pm

I just searched for the word "Wilde" in OMNI and the search did not return any match (0 matches returned). Then I further narrowed it down with the author Rudi, again no match returned. It should have returned: http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/Foru...ML/000156.html

PremEx Aug 27, 1999 12:19 pm

Here's the problem I'm having with search: When I use the default that searches "All Forums" I just get back a blank page. But if I specify a particular forum (say "United"), it works fine. But this doesn't help much if you don't already know where to look.

Punki Aug 27, 1999 8:56 pm

I'm still getting "document contains no data" logging on from 3 different systems????????????? http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

PremEx Aug 27, 1999 9:42 pm

Punki, try re-loading your Framisaxle.

Efrem Aug 31, 1999 8:15 am

I'm still getting it. The symptom is the same as PremEx's: it works fine if you tell it which forum to search, but not if you search all forums (fora?). As distinct from Baze, it didn't matter if I searched for a single word or multiple words.

It's really sending nothing back. I checked the HTML source of the reply. It was empty. It's not like it's returning something that browsers display as a blank page.

Good luck tracking this one down!

Michael at WebFlyer Sep 1, 1999 11:34 am

This is to let you know that we beleive we have finally overcome the search difficulties and have turned this function back on.

We would like you to test the search engine and let us know if it works for you.

Note: You will notice a little longer wait for the results to return to you but you should be able to find what you're looking for.
Thank you for your patience.

Search for Wilde in OMNI still does not return Rudi's article, but returns two other articles which contain 'wilder' and 'wilderness'.

Any possibility of wildcard matches? Or case sensitive matches, or string matches?

dgolds Sep 1, 1999 7:35 pm

9/1, 7:40 MDT: Search on a user-id is not working. I tried to find posts from user MJW; no luck.

shadow Sep 1, 1999 8:14 pm

9/1 10:20pm EDT

Did a search by name (ranles) for past 10 days. Took a while but I got 5 postings going back to 8/22.

Punki Sep 1, 1999 8:24 pm

Punki, sometimes clearing your Gigamatrix also improves perfomance.

Michael at WebFlyer Sep 7, 1999 3:21 pm

As you are all aware we still continue to have problems with the search feature on FlyerTalk.

I want to start by saying that we appreciate your continued support and patience...thank you.

We have managed to nail down a couple of the problems with it but we still have one or two hurdles to cross and we'll hopefully have the situation resolved.

We have noticed that the search seems to work fairly well if you know the forum you wish to search and pretty much doesn't work at all on searching the whole board at one time...that's the snag, and if you can't have that feature it kind of defeats the purpose of having the search at all.

I'll keep you posted with the latest.

Michael @ WebFlyer: Even knowing the forum I want to search doesn't help much. I wanted to see if anybody has posted the best coach seats on a United 747. When I search for "747" and "coach" and just search the United forum, I get 501 matches - some of which don't have either word at all!

Keep trying!

doc Sep 13, 1999 11:52 am

FYI, update. No results from searchs either yesterday or today.

Punki Sep 22, 1999 11:47 pm

Give us an "S"
Give us an "E"
Give us an "A"
Give us an "R"
Give us a "C"
Give us an "H"

SEARCH, SEARCH, SEARCH!!!

(Thought it needed a little encouragement). http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
