New FT homepage?

Logged off FT & then remembered I needed to post something, so logged on. Totally different home page 'look'.

One thing missing (as far as I can tell) is some of the parts/links that existed before on the homepage, such as registering for FT, TOS, FAQs, My Flyertalk, etc.

Are they there somewhere, or did they disappear w/ the new homepage & are in a sub-page?

BTW - for others, if you click ALL under your handle when it shows you last thread you read, that will take you to My Flyertalk as you normally/are used to see it.

Cheers.

There's a sign-up button at the top right when you're not logged in.

Just loaded FT again & saw that. However, the FAQs, New to FT, etc, tabs that were 1/2-way down the home page on the old version & would be helpful to newbies don't exist on the home page anymore - unless I missed that part too.

Cheers.

Most of those features are in the pulldown if you hover over Forum, Members, Extras, Help, etc.

bconver Nov 6, 2012 2:11 pm

Users who are not signed in receive a 'Getting Started' box above the fold on the right that link to the FAQ

Sorry - missed that earlier.

When I was logging in just now I accidently clicked on sign-up & the following popped up (along w/ a box to agree to the FT guidelines & a link to them).

"FlyerTalk features discussions and chat boards that covers the most up-to-date traveler information. An interactive community dedicated to your favorite topic: frequent flyer miles! That's right: all miles, all the time. The FlyerTalk forums are open for business 24 hours, 7 days a week. Even better, all travelers -- from vacation travelers to mileage junkies -- are welcome in the community. Just enroll and you can get to the business at hand: conversing about programs, how to make the most of your miles and points, general travel, airports, destination and dining information."

I wouldn't mind something similar on the home page. Right now the homepage just says "the largest online travel community".

Cheers.

The old homepage also had the 5 most recent posts each for 3 groups of forums, is that still available anywhere?

I do miss the box with most recent posts on the front page.
Hope this feature will be restored.

Ditto, please restore this feature!

If it wasn't for this thread, I wouldn't have known the homepage had changed as I have the log-in page bookmarked but when looking at the new homepage (and maybe it's because I'm logged in), imho, it's way too busy

SanDiego1K Nov 7, 2012 11:07 am

goalie, because we're friends, I'll risk embarrassing you a bit. There is a site wide announcement up:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/techn...-live-549.html

There was a blog entry on the Gate. It will also be covered in the next Talk Mail.

This really demonstrates the challenges of getting messages read that we do our best to get out boardwide.

Do I still get a tootsie pop next time I see you?

For Internet Brands, feedback on the homepage from the Talkboard candidates can be found here.

Yahillwe Nov 7, 2012 8:29 pm

FT page.

Did the Ft page change or am I the only one who sees it differently???

And no am not drunk and have not had a drink in a few days.

Am still trying to figure it out.

adrouault Nov 7, 2012 8:31 pm

Are you in either Washington or colorado? :)

Yahillwe Nov 7, 2012 8:32 pm

No, am on the other side of the world, totally opposite :D. Besides, don't the new rules apply AFTER Jan? :p. But, frankly do you see the new opening page?

I have a screenshot, but don't know how to post it here, should I do it as I do photos?

adrouault Nov 7, 2012 8:37 pm

Indeed I do. Wait, other side of the world, so Amsterdam? :) It's all in your head.

RadioGirl Nov 7, 2012 8:39 pm

Uhh... every forum page (for example, OMNI ) has an announcement at the top titled "New FlyerTalk home page is live!" dated 6 November.

So, no, it's not just you.:confused:

Yahillwe Nov 7, 2012 8:54 pm

Ok, for a second there I thought that indeed I was in Amsterdam, but then realized that I was even further east and south of that, many hrs further...:D

Now your point of "getting the word out" is valid and VERY important as with me who has the log-in page bookmarked, I'm gonna miss the new page. Plus, and maybe it's me or maybe it's not me, but I have never been able to read ANY announcement on my iPhone as the announcement title is there but when opening it, it shows blank so unless it's a very important one which will cause me to log out from the app on my phone and go in via the main desktop site using Safari on my phone, I'm gonna space on the announcement the next time I log in via the desktop site

Please see this thread for an explanation.

We have also shifted your thread over to Technical Issues where it's perhaps more apropos.

Thanks.

FWIW I really like the new format and find it more like a table of contents page in a glossy magazine. In this case I say change is good. ^

+1000

This was one of my favorite features as I always discovered new content from it and kept me on the site more. Without it I will spend less time on Flyertalk.

This is the ONLY feature I used regularly. There are too many forums to visit for updates without it. It is a "must" feature. Please bring it back.

Same here. Strongly agree. What was the rationale for removing it?

Also, I don't understand why "Your Most Recent Thread" (promo box at right side) points to a random one I started 12 years ago.

IBobi Nov 12, 2012 6:21 pm

For those who miss "5 most recent threads" have you tried the "New Posts" link in the forums?

Yes, if there was a way to filter out the OMNI forums, it would be a decent alternative.

Thanks, that looks good. I've bookmarked it and will try it for a couple of days to see if it seems a good alternative to the lost functionality.

Please bring this back! I can't use FT without this feature

This is an excellent suggestion, Oliver.

Probably there are many other applications to exclude specific fora as well, which FTers can use to create a number of specific searches tailored to their needs. The URL/forum ID trick is a good one!

Well, it took a while to find. I have tried it. I don't like it.

Why do website people keep changing things that aren't broken, or keep making problems worse if the website is broken. I'm not just looking at FT, I'm also looking at Delta, and the Gawker websites which have basically killed their commenting, and Consumerist which had security issues but months later has still failed to fix their commenting.

FT has lost half of the time that I used it before the change. Maybe that's not a big deal because I post like every 4 days, but I'm sure I'm not alone. :td::td::td:

Thanks Oliver2002, that works really well, I wish I had known about that ability years ago. I have extended to also ignore the OMNI/Games board, here is the updated URL:
Code:

www.flyertalk.com/forum/search.php?do=getdaily&exclude=457,652,699

I think you're missing the point - ie, it's a bit of a push/pull. Before, the 5 most recent threads were on the homepage & no one had to set anything up. It seems to be a feature that the majority of the FTers commenting on this thread valued.

So they would appreciate knowing if it's something that can be brought back (since some are now spending less time on FT, it should be considered) or if they're SOL/can only access it via the New Posts link (in which case you're going to have to do a sitewide announcement to let people know of the work-around) to a former standard feature.

Cheers. Sharon

IBobi Nov 14, 2012 3:33 pm

Hey there,

The recent threads/post will be a My FlyerTalk feature in a near future update, so fear not, it will be available, just not on the home page as it did not prove useful to everyone.

Paul

Georgia Peach Nov 27, 2012 11:20 pm

I really don't like the new design. The font is much smaller and the home page is cluttered. Kinda reminds me of the new Delta web page. :p

FriendlySkies Nov 28, 2012 1:18 am

I agree with some of the recent comments. the home page is much too cluttered, and can be seen as a turn-off for some people. What happened to KISS?

That is a GREAT question.

I pretty much just ignore the homepage now because it is just way too cluttered. I just look for the tiny yellow "my flyertalk" icon in the upper right corner and that pretty much sums up my dealings with the new homepage.

Are there any more "secret" codewords other than getdaily? Is there a way to search for newly started threads instead of new posts?
