This is an excellent suggestion, Oliver.

Probably there are many other applications to exclude specific fora as well, which FTers can use to create a number of specific searches tailored to their needs. The URL/forum ID trick is a good one!

Well, it took a while to find. I have tried it. I don't like it.

Why do website people keep changing things that aren't broken, or keep making problems worse if the website is broken. I'm not just looking at FT, I'm also looking at Delta, and the Gawker websites which have basically killed their commenting, and Consumerist which had security issues but months later has still failed to fix their commenting.

FT has lost half of the time that I used it before the change. Maybe that's not a big deal because I post like every 4 days, but I'm sure I'm not alone. :td::td::td:

Thanks Oliver2002, that works really well, I wish I had known about that ability years ago. I have extended to also ignore the OMNI/Games board, here is the updated URL:
Code:

www.flyertalk.com/forum/search.php?do=getdaily&exclude=457,652,699

I think you're missing the point - ie, it's a bit of a push/pull. Before, the 5 most recent threads were on the homepage & no one had to set anything up. It seems to be a feature that the majority of the FTers commenting on this thread valued.

So they would appreciate knowing if it's something that can be brought back (since some are now spending less time on FT, it should be considered) or if they're SOL/can only access it via the New Posts link (in which case you're going to have to do a sitewide announcement to let people know of the work-around) to a former standard feature.

Cheers. Sharon

Hey there,

The recent threads/post will be a My FlyerTalk feature in a near future update, so fear not, it will be available, just not on the home page as it did not prove useful to everyone.

I really don't like the new design. The font is much smaller and the home page is cluttered. Kinda reminds me of the new Delta web page. :p

I agree with some of the recent comments. the home page is much too cluttered, and can be seen as a turn-off for some people. What happened to KISS?

That is a GREAT question.

I pretty much just ignore the homepage now because it is just way too cluttered. I just look for the tiny yellow "my flyertalk" icon in the upper right corner and that pretty much sums up my dealings with the new homepage.

Are there any more "secret" codewords other than getdaily? Is there a way to search for newly started threads instead of new posts?

Try the following, using Thread Start Time using the Descending Sort Order:

At the bottom of your browser window, you will find the Display Options area. I use the features found in this area many times to search for information instead of using the actual Search function.

For example, you may want to search for an extremely popular thread to which someone posted within the last two months.

To search for popular threads within a certain period of time:
  1. Go to the Display Options area near the bottom-right corner of the window of your browser.
  2. Choose Number of Replies in the Sorted By pop-up list.
  3. Choose a desired timeframe — in this case, Last 2 Months — from the From The pop-up list.
  4. If desired, choose either Ascending or Descending in the Sort Order pop-up list.
  5. Click on the Show Threads button.
The results will show all threads within two months with the most — or least — replies first, depending on whether you chose Ascending or Descending in the Sort Order pop-up list.

Number of Views will also work here instead of Number of Replies, but with different results, as the threads that appear as a result of your search will be sorted by the number of times the threads were viewed instead of the number of replies the threads had replies posted to them.

Options that are available to you in the Display Options area include:

Showing Threads will display in the dark blue area how many threads are being displayed on the “page” which you are viewing — for example, Showing threads 1 to 25 of 175 means that you are currently viewing the first 25 threads out of a total of 175 threads in that forum, based on the options chosen below.

Sorted By allows how the desired method the threads should be sorted in a forum using one of the following choices:
  • Thread Title sorts threads by title in alphabetical order.
  • Last Post Time is the default for FlyerTalk, which lists threads in chronological order depending on the time something was last posted to each thread.
  • Thread Start Time displays threads in the chronological order in which they were created.
  • Number of Replies sorts threads by the order of how many replies were posted to them.
  • Number of Views sorts threads by the order of how many times those threads were viewed.
  • Thread Starter sorts threads by the alphabetical order of the names of the FlyerTalk members who launched those threads as original posters.
  • Thread Rating is useless as of when this information is posted, although it will list threads by how they have been rated even though the Thread Rating system is currently disabled on FlyerTalk.
From The allows only the threads within a certain selected period of time to be sorted in a forum using one of the following choices:
  • Last Day
  • Last 2 Days
  • Last Week
  • Last 10 Days is the default used for many forums on FlyerTalk, although there may be some forums which may have this set to a different default due to the history of traffic to those forums.
  • Last 2 Weeks
  • Last Month
  • Last 45 Days
  • Last 2 Months
  • Last 75 Days
  • Last 100 Days
  • Last Year
  • Beginning will list every thread in that forum in chronological order.
Sort Order determines the order in which threads are to be sorted in a forum either chronologically or alphabetically, depending on what is selected for Sorted By, using one of the following choices:
  • Ascending
  • Descending
After choosing the desired settings in how the threads should be sorted, one must click on the Show Threads button in order to activate the results.

As far as I can tell, you still need to enter a search criteria. I'm looking for something similar to the "New Posts" button that shows all new threads (preferably excepting OMNI forums). The URL Oliver2002 posted above gives a New Posts type functionality with the ability to filter out forums:

Why does the "Your Most Recent Thread" area on the front page not update? I have been seeing the same "Most Recent Thread" listed for the past month.

I never log out of FT, is that a necessary action?

It should change after you have posted somewhere... such as here :)

Nope, mine still shows a thread that I haven't view or posted to in maybe a year or more. And I've posted plenty the last 30 days so it's not waiting for a new post to change it.
