Frequent but Random Empty Pages

This issue seems to be limited to the iPad running iOS 5.

As I browse the forums, clicking on a link to view a forum or thread I am often (roughly 30% of the time) presented with a page that contains a heading and ads, but no FlyerTalk content. A forced refresh causes the page to display correctly, but it's annoying to do that as often as seems to be necessary.

A quick scan of recent threads in this forum didn't turn anything up; is anyone else experiencing this issue?

NovaEngr Dec 4, 2011 2:58 pm

I'm having the same issue with MAC OS X and Safari. I have to refresh once and sometimes twice to get content to load. This issue started a couple of days ago.

GB Dec 4, 2011 5:08 pm

I am using Internet Explorer and have seen this also approx. 30% of the time for 2-3 days now. Even with a page refresh, it sometimes takes 2-3 attempts for the page to display.

Brought to tech's attention. Thank you,

Paul

Dodge DeBoulet Dec 5, 2011 12:33 pm

Thank you, Paul. For the record, I do not seem to be experiencing this issue in Firefox. I can't speak to IE, since I avoid it like the plague for all but applications that require it.

david55 Dec 6, 2011 6:56 am

The same issue using Chrome. When I hit " back" I get a blank page with the FT heading but no content. I have to start over by going back to MyFT page.

MSPeconomist Dec 6, 2011 7:00 am

I have noticed this too on my iPad, but not nearly 30% of the time.

ediemac1 Dec 6, 2011 7:24 am

I am experiencing this in IE, Firefox, and Safari. It seems to have gotten worse in the last 24 hours. I'd estimate 50% or more pages in any browser I use now requires a forced reload.

Kagehitokiri Dec 6, 2011 8:45 am

more on blank pages - recent tech change?

offhand, dont recall this happening many times if any before

very recently started seeing blank pages - not omni, not ipad

sometimes frequent/repeated

new bandwidth management or attack protection?

crazyMRer Dec 7, 2011 3:42 am

I have been having the same thing happening using IE

WIRunner Dec 7, 2011 10:17 am

Having the same problem with opera and firefox on a win7 machine.

GB Dec 7, 2011 11:11 am

This is still continuing for me, both in IE and Safari. Does not appear to be fixed.

Kagehitokiri Dec 7, 2011 12:50 pm

remove "safari/ipad" from title?

Well, I'm only seeing it on my iPad. Firefox 8 seems to be working normally for me. :D

(j/k. Of course we should change the title.)

IBobi Dec 7, 2011 1:12 pm

I changed the title.

Tech has been apprised of this but they are having difficulty replicating the issue; any tech data you can give about your browser/version, exactly where this is happening, times it is happening, etc. would be helpful.

Thank you!

GB Dec 7, 2011 2:22 pm

This has been happening for the last 5-6 days with me. No pattern with the time of day. I have probably been on FT 15 times on several different computers. It happens approx. 30% of the time. Requires a page refresh, sometimes two times to get anything to display on the page.

djk7 Dec 8, 2011 9:05 am

Happening to me regularly too, probably at least 10% of the time. Google chrome on Win 7. I typically pick "Open in new tab" from the "my flyertalk" page.

BLI-Flyer Dec 9, 2011 6:47 am

I'm experiencing the same issue with Chrome (ver. 15.0.874.121 m) and Windows 7. Hitting the refresh button generally brings up the full page, but sometimes I've had to hit refresh more than once. I have a fiber optic connection and have no problems with pages on any other web site.

I'm seeing this issue, too, on my iPad, but just yesterday.

txrus Dec 10, 2011 8:18 am

I think it's the Holland America ad on the right side of the page that's causing the problem-whenever it happens to me, that ad is there.

Hit refresh, the ad disappears & the content loads.

I seem to recall a similar problem several years ago w/one of their ads, as well.

GB Dec 10, 2011 9:51 am

This is still occuring. I also experienced it on my Iphone.

Ah, that may explain why I'm not experiencing the issue on Firefox, since it's blocking most ads automatically.

I'm experiencing it with firefox and windows 7 starter. Refresh of the page usually loads it.

Seems to be it.

I've been doing some concerted testing this morning, and the only time this issue exhibits itself is when one of the Holland America ads is present. The rest of the time, no problem (well, other than the "can't remember last post" issue which still occurs sporadically).

My testing today has been exclusively on the iPad, which does not have any ad-blocking capability.

I'll also confirm that it's on pages with the Holland America ads. (I'm using Chrome.)

Great catch. It is the Holland America ads. I am seeing this in IE. Anyone listening from FT?

JerryFF Dec 11, 2011 12:20 pm

Also still happening on Firefox. And the Holland America ad on the right side. Good detective work!

Kagehitokiri Dec 11, 2011 2:41 pm

i will watch for holland ad and report back

thebat Dec 12, 2011 7:54 am

stopped

It was happening here with FF for a few days but it seems to have stopped.

IBobi Dec 12, 2011 11:56 am

That's the kind of eagle eyes that make it easy to track things down!

I'll report that ad & get it removed.

Thanks everyone :)

Paul

WIRunner Dec 12, 2011 8:01 pm

it is still happening.

IBobi Dec 13, 2011 11:17 am

It can take some time, depending on the ad network that is serving that Holland America ad -- they may decide to fix the creative rather than pull it.

Let's roll with this for another day or two.

Kagehitokiri Dec 13, 2011 3:11 pm

just saw it with the holland ad

JerryFF Dec 17, 2011 4:44 pm

Still happening -- 7 days and counting since Holland American ad identified as the culprit.

Kagehitokiri Dec 19, 2011 12:59 pm

happens a lot in OMNI?

bhatnasx Dec 19, 2011 2:44 pm

Had to refresh 4 times in a row to get rid of the Holland America ad. Makes me never want to actually use Holland America.

had that happen once or twice in OMNI, and i rarely use OMNI.

WIRunner Dec 19, 2011 7:55 pm

still happening. Ironically when I tried to go to MyFlyertalk to post here, as well on this very thread.
It is almost as if that banner is stalking me. I can see one right now... a little square one with happy laughing people... they're watching. ;)

IBobi Dec 20, 2011 11:29 am

Sorry about this folks. I know this is annoying having to refresh. I'll see if I can get an update today.
