Problems with links to individual posts
Background: I have my "number of posts per screen" option set to a number other than the forum default.
Problem: Like other FT posters, I often link to specific posts relevant to a given discussion. This works fine if I don't mind having the linked-to post presented in a window by itself (e.g., http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/14388759-post41.html), but if I instead use a link to that post in context -- that is, surrounded by adjacent posts in the thread, the link is broken for anybody using a different "screenful" setting. Thus, this link to the same post as above, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...l#post14388759, likely takes you somewhere other than to post 41 in that thread. Having the URL be dependent on user-specific settings seems like a bad idea. Yes, I could avoid this using another (seemingly undocumented) option, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...-first.html#41 (where I append #<post number in thread> to the base thread URL), but that requires me, and every other FT user posting links, to hand-tweak the URL instead of using the one autogenerated by FT & displayed in the upper-right corner of the post to be linked to. Not the biggest technical problem on FT, to be sure, but irritating all the same. |
as you may be indicating, the problem is the page numbers in thread titles, which vary by user (and login status)
