Points

  • People on Flyertalk are good enough at condescension to begin with
  • The emoticon usually does nothing but make the person using it look like a jerk
  • It does not promote discussion in any way
  • It helps threads that are emotional to begin with, degenerate more quickly

Counterpoint

  • This emoticon is a nearly foolproof way to weed out the douches and lame-o's who think they're clever

Thoughts?

Agreed. The only emoticon that is really necessary for written communication is the ;), to show that what was written was in jest.

You probably had missed this OMNI thread and this TB thread. ;)

As a matter of fact, TB was into the FT smilie business a long while ago (see here and here). I doubt the current TBers would invest more energy into smilies.

Indeed I did miss them. I still think :rolleyes: is obnoxious and misused 99% of the time, and often helps lead to the degeneration of a discussion.
