I really have no opinion on both the avatar and “smilie” issues.

Why not have a 60-day or similar trial period in either all or select FlyerTalk forums pertaining to allowing FlyerTalk members to use avatars or an additional set of “smilies” instead of speculating what might or might not happen should either be implemented?

excellent idea Canarsie! I'd even go further giving the MOD's a trigger to stop the trial earlier if things got out-of-hand workload wise. My money is on it not being a big deal.

What would be the pass/fail criteria for such an experiment?

The Religious Travel forum failed its pass/fail instantiation criteria, but it is still in existence.

IMHO our benevolent dictators don't seem to be involved enough in the day-to-day workings of FT for that to be an effective solution, though in principle I like it.

The moderators have no such power. FT is one of the largest UBBs. There is no trivial solution for such a trial.

Then drop your dimes on your own time, not mine. ;)

Gang,

A friendly reminder that this is a thread about "Input/Feedback on Expanded 'Smile' Choices" and discussion on Avatars. It is NOT about moderators and whether or not they should be on Talkboard.

Kokonutz and Punki have made some recent requests for input... please focus on the core topic here.

I would suggest a straight up or down vote on these.

I agree.

I’ve supported this set of smilies all along as they offer a slightly expanded selection and are more contemporary than our current stick-figure set.

I suggest we decide the smilies issue first and then start a separate thread to discuss the avatar issue.

I suspect that the actual experience of those who have dealt with images on FlyerTalk ought to carry at least as much weight as the suppositions of those who have not done so.

You still continue to ignore the fact that there is very little support for the addition of avatars and a great deal of opposition.

And again, comparing avatars to the other photo-abled parts of FT is like comparing apples to oranges.

On a separate topic, perhaps this thread could be split into two, since it seems to contain both discussions of upgraded smilies and avatars.

This would probably be a very good idea.

Fair enough. If you want to make that motion in the private TB forum I will second and support it! @:-)

I also agree that avatars are a totally separate topic that I would have to spend some time looking into before I could make a judgement one way or the other as I don't like cluttered boards but I also don't want FT to be TOO stodgy.

Birdstrike: I don't understand your response.

AFAIK, there is no way to poll or otherwise consult the moderator community as a whole to make global operational decisions such as you suggest.

To implement an out-of-band pulling of a feature would probably mean that Randy or an IB representative just arbitrarily makes the decision and instructs the technical team to make it so.

Punki Dec 29, 2007 10:26 am

Actually, birdstrike, there may be a way to accomlish this.

FlyerTalk software definitely has the ability to conduct polls. The moderators have a private forum. So my conclusion, without offering an opinion as to whether I personally believe that it is necessary or adviseable, would be that it is technically possible.

Certainly, Canarsie has presented a some very unique, interesting and thought-stimulating ideas.

while obviously there are more important issues for the TalkBoard to address, I was wondering if there were any updates on this?

Spiff Jan 25, 2008 10:55 am

We last discussed the practical matters of this about 3 weeks ago.

I've bumped our thread in the private forum.
