Confusing censorship

I am just a bit puzzled why Randy closed down this

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum...ML/000025.html

thread since it was drying up anyway. Seems like censorship from the highest level since there are no moderators in this forum. Would it be too much to ask for a "Please explain"?

FWIW, Randy kinda' did, right? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Just wondering IF perhaps this other thread and some possible "confusion" over the two "Mikeys'" ("likes it" & "1003") may possibly also have had something to do with it? Not that I'd ever know! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Also, inasmuch as censorship is concerned, IMHO, the post was actually not removed, and the other above referenced post also lives on:

Having said this, FWIW, I too would have likely not closed the thread as well, yet I naturally very much respect Randy's decision to do so! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

No offense to Dudemon et al, but I don't see why Randy shut down this posting:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/001674.html

but chose leave this one open:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/001679.html

Anyone care to explain how the latter is "pertinent to miles or points"?

Really? Are you serious?

***Taken from Randy's post***
"This thread is not going anywhere. While part of the FT Community, the topic is not pertinent to earning miles or points."

Yes, I am serious. I don't feel that the first thread supported the idea that FT is a "pickup joint", as noted above. Furthermore, if Randy plans on being consistent, he has some serious spring cleaning to do in FT Community Forum. There are plenty of threads that aren't pertinent to earning miles or points.

I have to disagree with you, the first/locked thread certainly seems to have more than it's share of not-so-subtle innuendos. And the second thread pertains to FTers' FT habits, which seems to be quite pertinent to miles and points, IMHO.

Guy Betsy has a better posting for this:

(near the bottom of the page)

Oh, and since when are threads subject to puritanical standards for content? Too steamy or not too steamy? Gimme a break.

I'm not asking for the locked thread to be unlocked. I only think it's fair to have indiscriminate censorship. The reason why the lockdown occurred was a rather flimsy one, inconsistent with the rest of the threads in the forum.

Maybe since this is a FF board ...

You're right. Maybe ALL threads with "not-so-subtle innuendos" should be limited to OMNI or TravelBuzz. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

Current OMNI threads:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum...ML/004045.html

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum...ML/004044.html

And then this one that resided in MilesBuzz for a few days until Randy moved it to TravelBuzz:

http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...ML/006438.html

Frankly, I don't care what Randy (or the Moderators, whom he supports) decides to close, move or leave open: these are his boards and I respect his decisions.

But, cactuspete, to suggest that impertinent "not-so-subtle innuendos" existing in this specific thread are good cause to close it seems highly selective.

cactuspete Jan 31, 2002 10:55 am

Fair enough. We just draw the line at a different place. And we cetainly have a different interpretation of the word "innuendo." Granted, those other threads may be objectionable to some, as well. I just don't think that any thread on FT should evolve into a "pick-up joint" (I know, undoubtedly there are examples of similar, "hetero" threads). It is the old "slippery slope" argument.

Agreed, cactuspete. I appreciate your response.

Let me chime in here. I closed that thread titled "Reporting as directed, Sir!" for basically three reasons. First of all it was not a thread of discussion but rather a re-direction to another thread where a discussion was going on. If you look closely, it was 25 days between the time the thread was started and the time I closed it for "lack on interest." In that 25 days, there were 2 maybe 3 comments that were even close to saying anything related to the thread. Secondly, the title was not reflective of getting members attention to a particular issue for the TalkBoard and finally if you note the post above my closing. It was from the person starting the thread and that person posted "wrong post sorry", which I guess I thought meant they didn't mean for the post to have been there in the first place. I didn't move it, edit it or do anything other than try to confine what i thought was the topic to the threads that were ongoing at the time.

Now let me move on to the comment by izzik. Really, do any of you think I read each and every post and thread on FlyerTalk? Here's a hint. Most days I never have the time to even come close to FlyerTalk. On a great day I may have 2 minutes to do something and on a really, really outstanding day, can even put five minutes in. When a post/thread is edited - very close to 100% of the time my actions are the result of a concern or concerns of members of the board who send me there to check it out for some violation of posting proceedure. If I get one done and not another - guess what. No one contacted me about the other post you mention. It's really that simple. I may not agree with every post concern that I receive, but honestly, if you don't win me over with your opinion of a particular post does that mean I'm the bad guy? The other day I had an exchange with Matthew Clement about a particular post and it was so cool when at the end he emailed me and said that we now agree to disagree on that issue and move on. He didn't seem to hold it against me that i wasn't agreeing and I neither about him (whom BTW is a very sharp member of this board). Same with cblaisd who I've traded countless emails with. We don't always agree but I very much welcome his eyes and ears and in fact look forward to his positive contributions to FlyerTalk.

So, not sure if this answers your questions or concerns - i know, too much information - but gang, we now have just at 850,000 total posts on FlyerTalk. Tell me, how many have you honestly looked at.

Cheers,
Randy
