Exactly where I was coming from in making my earlier post against this forum proliferation.

The seconder and all current Yes voters have agreed to amend this proposal by deleting the typo "Frequent Flyer". The proposal is now:

The TalkBoard recommends the addition of four new forums:

Budget Asian, Australian and South Pacific Airlines
Budget European Airlines
Budget Middle East and Africa Airlines
Budget North and South America Airlines

Now this proposal makes a lot of sense.^

Not to me as the typo correction does nothing to change the original intent to foist another four forums on FT.

Change made to first post.

I love how TB makes up rules as it goes along.

Agreed. A big NO. :td:

Perhaps some creative tweaking...

1 or 4 forums?

First, it seems that the need to have the information has been agreed on. But why? Let's take a moment to consider which information is missing and also why this information is of value.

Hi, tcook052. I'm trying to work with your objection. It's difficult unless we could have 1 major heading followed by the ability to branch out to the airlines and regions required. Sometimes we just have to use a non-aligned airline (reward points or no reward points notwithstanding) to get where we need to go. OR sometimes the discount on such an airline is so comparatively great that it would be irresponsible to buy the ticket that gives you points later and perks now.

Perhaps this could be solved by the creation of a separate new forum. My suggestion would be NON-ALIGNED AIRLINES and it would cover the travel options like LCCs and the hard-to-get and difficult to ticket airlines offered by the HAHN AIR PLATE. http://ticketing.hahnair.travel/partner-airlines.html As a TA, you may have seen the hours of labour that the HR plate saves in helping to get people to odd parts of the world.

In any case, the 1 or 4 issue seems to be a problem that must be resolved by formatting, but not an issue of whether or not the information is needed.

Would this give 'completeness' of information to FT?

Should this idea go any further? Just don't reply to it if you think that it's nonsense.

SkiAdcock Oct 2, 2013 10:47 am

There was discussion to have a single LCC forum on FT vs. not having one at all, primarily started because of this thread (started in '10 & bumped up in '13). Good points made there.

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/talkb...ir-forums.html

The reality is that LCCs exist, continue to increase, & FTers fly them (and complain about them :p ). Some have FF programs; some don't. So the thought process was to move forward with a LCC forum.

The reason for the 4 forums vs. a single LCC forum is that most FTers go to regional fora they're familiar with, which is why you find a lot of the current LCC forum discussions in the "Other (fill in the region) airlines" forums.

Would someone from Asia (for example) think to go to just a low cost carrier forum or would they look to a region they're familiar with? Since FT is global, we need to think beyond just the Spirits or the Easy Jets or RyanAirs. As this list shows, there are more (list from sticky in Budget Travel forum).

Note that some in that list have their own forum (Aegean, Air Berlin) or are part of or are subsumed in an FFP (Air Europa or Cityjet, which both fall under the AFKL Flying Blue banner, at least for now).

I just cut/pasted the list to show there are more than just a few LCCs such as Easy Jet, Ryan Air, Allegient or Spirit, & broken out by region. I didn't check in the post to see the last time it was updated, so there might be (a very) few that now have their own forums. It was meant to be an example, not an absolute.

Cheers.

Indeed. However, most do not and rightly belong in a single Budget Airline forum.

Paraphrasing what I just posted on the private TB forum:

When I was a young buck on the TB and even more of a firebrand than I am today, I used to throw out motions that *I* thought were brilliant without bothering to gather much crowdsourcing or input, which lead to sloppy motions that did not have a lot of support.

Wiser TB members than I helped me understand that patience and thoroughness can achieve better results even though they are less efficient.

And, for example, I spent a year mulling, studying and talking about what was broken about Travel News before making a motion. And lo and behold, that situation has been addressed!

Along those same lines, with all respect to the motion maker and seconder, I feel like this proposal needed more input and crowdsourcing before it was ripe for a motion and vote.

So I am leaning to a no vote on this.

This might be the right way to go. But I'd rather have more time for crowdsourcing this issue before taking action.

skiadcock's list is very outdated

Lots of those airlines are out of business, some for many years.

As examples, there is no more 1. dba [Deutsche BA] 2. Virgin Express 3. Windjet 4. Sky Express 5. Aero California (that's been gone a long time!) 6. at least 2 of the Mexican LCCs but I'm too apathetic to check 7. Air Tran 8. Webjet 9. Viva Macau 10. Air Deccan 11. Kingfisher 12. 1Time (but at least 1 more new LCC [FlySafair] has been added in South Africa and Fastjet has applied for an AOC)

Those are just off the top of my head. There are many more.

That list is of no use as a source of hard information. Perhaps somebody might wish to update or expunge it.
