Maybe I am missing the point, but why are the last minute upgrades priced so high?
I mean, 1500CHF seems to be the simply the difference between fares.
I know that US based carriers often upgrade TATL flights for around $600 at the gate.

When they need someone to upgrade for operational reasons they use a different cheaper tariff. When that comes in to play it is often an indication of overbooking and those with status should consider declining the offer as they might get an op-up.

'Cos LX charge this when they don't need someone to upgrade but you want to.

LX 289 JNB - ZRH on A340
They offered me at check-in (upon asking): Y --> C for 6000 - 6600 Rand (could not say the exact amount, they said) which was about US 1000 - 1100 at the time (early this year).
I declined and flew Y

I got a CHF 500 ZRH-BOS upgrade Y-C last September. The woman at the ticket counter seemed suprised it was so low.
IMHO, it's at the edge of being 'worth it'. It's a not-particularly-long daytime flight with the sloped C seats and pretty marginal soft product. The food presentation with Y-style carts leaves much to be desired.
A couple years back i did $500 upgrade on GRU-ZRH. For a 12 hour overnight flight, that price is definately right!

LX 53 BOS-ZRH - was offered an upgrade for USD 400 and accepted it. Had the mini cabin seat 4A and considering I was on a cheapo CO ticket stock it sounded good for some extra miles credited to M&M and experiencing new A343 with funky livery.
