NINE locked threads on the first page of MilesBuzz
This is why I always thought moderators were a bad idea.
The best forums on FT are Starwood and OMNI, both of which are unmoderated. Over agressive moderation, in my opinion has ruined MilesBuzz. I think it's time to reconsider whether they were such a good idea. |
HUH? Surely you agree that "Wireless laptops", "Air Canada Sucks" and "Please close Air Canada Sucks" don't belong their? this has nothing to do with moderation but with posters who have no idea where they are posting or (in the case of the AC threads) decide to post in the top board to get some attention..
There is moderation on content and moderation on subject, this was clearly done because of posting in the wrong board, it had nothing to do with the content as they were not edited etc... |

not to fight over this, just to show where I personally stand.
I appreciate Craig's moderation way a lot! Thank you Craig. |
So, becuase we have a number of members who are either too lazy/arrogant to post to the correct forum, we should just let MilesBuzz become a cesspool of off-topic threads?
I, for one, wish the threads were simply moved, not locked. Locking the thread and telling the offending party where the thread has been moved does nothing to entice the offending party to post in the correct forum the next time. FT would be MUCH more valuable if the members could stay on-topic. |
I agree 100% with Scott.
If Miles Buzz were "ruined" (which I don't think it is, by the way), it would simply be because some people do not take the time to think about where to post topics appropriately. Some others just don't know, and they often admit that in their posts. I think Craig is doing a great job. |
I think moderators are needed in certain situations, and I thank them for doing a good job.
My only suggestion is that when something is locked, closed or moved that a post from the moderator is at the end of the thread explaining why it was closed, locked or moved. |
I guess I'm in the minority. But I have found that there is far less useful info in MilesBuzz than there used to be. I've missed out on great deals and bonuses that would previously have been postec in MilesBuzz, but now are hidden in the specific file. I don't regularly fly United, so I don't regularly peruse the United board, for example.
Personally, I thought that the three thread discussing deals on UAL, AA, and NWA, were all things that should have been left in MilesBuzz. FWIW- I find FT a LESS USEFUL resource than I did before moderators. I don't have the time or energy to look at each forum. I liked MilesBuzz as a catch-all. That's not to say I don't appreciate this board. I just think it was better before. Hang me now. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |

I agree with Bosoxfan45. There are certain thread that go over the line and should be dealt with. There are certain topics (e.g. Goldpoints) that sprout too many MilesBuzz topics and should be dealt with.
However, the current over-moderation seems to have made people afraid to post program-specific good deals in a place where more people will see them. I used to check MilesBuzz (and before that TheBuzz) first, now it's way down my list. |
What if folks posted their airline-specific info in the correct airline forum, and then in Miles Buzz simply a link to that? I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the suggestion (so am really asking for your thoughts) and I don't know whether such would pass muster with either Craig or Randy. I agree that I have gotten info on promotions that I wouldn't ordinarily (because I don't check every airline forum) because of Miles Buzz posts, but at the same time I do get tired of posters making it the Omni of anything marginally related to something sort of about flying. Thoughts?

cblaisd: In principle I think you have a very good idea. In fact, I have seen people do this before (not very often). In practice, though, I think it would be a challenge to motivate people to cross-reference airline specific mileage threads.
|
Good idea, cblaisd. The problem is getting people to post only to one thread or the other. On the other hand, if there are no posts to the cross-post on Buzz, it will quickly drop out of sight. In any event, drawing the line is difficult (i.e. as to which airline/program specific promos are worthy/of interest to the general FT population). All I know is that I had never flown American or Northwest or stayed at a Hilton until I discovered lucrative promotions for each program on Miles Buzz. I would not have known about those promos otherwise.

What if there was a new forum that was limited to one post per topic, where FT'ers could announce and link to program-specific topics with potentially broad appeal. Call it "FT Alerts" or "Hot Topics" or ? This way, FT'ers could be made aware of great deals in programs that they usually ignore. This might also solve the problem that frequently occurs when there are two separate discussions on the same subject, one in MilesBuzz and one in the appropriate program forum.
Optionally "Hot topics" could even be added automatically to point to the most active threads. |
