No need to be a cynic. Anyone in miles game long enough can smell it
There will be some "great value" hotels after new cat mapping for sure but I think it will be a devaluation in general.

I've been looking at the Sheraton Tokoriki in Fiji for an upcoming trip in September.

Three Nights
  • Award: 48,000 Starpoints
  • Revenue: $924.00 USD
  • C&P: 18,000 Starpoints + $330 USD
Obviously I would receive superior value by purchasing 30,000 Starwood Points for $682.50 and then redeem them using the C&P rate at the Sheraton Tokokriki leaving me with 12,000 Starwood Points left (more than I'd earn from spending $924).

I don't see any downside from doing this as I would still receive my Platinum benefits during the stay.

Thoughts?

Great! Question: if someone else in my family (at the same address) buys the starpoints on their account, can they transfer them to me without restriction?

Yes, as long as same address for more than 30 days.

If I already purchased my 30,000 points for the year for myself, can I still get a gift of more from someone else?

Actually just read the FAQ and it says "30,000 Starpoints per account per calendar year, whether purchased by the member him/herself or received as a gift from another member. If your purchase for another account exceeds that account’s 30,000 Starpoint purchase/gift maximum, the recipient will not be able to receive any Starpoints until the next calendar year. There are no refunds in these instances.".

Anyone have experience with this? And with starpoints going away Aug 1, how will you receive next calendar year?

I haven’t experienced this but....

I thought that an SPG member who shares your same address could buy 30k SPG points for their own account and then, once they have acquired those points, they would be allowed to share them with any other household member via a transfer in increments of 1k. I believe this would be a transfer, not a gifting, of points which seems to be allowed. At least that’s what I think.

Thanks. I guess I will just do that to be safe.

Apparently no bonus

My AMEX statement had just arrived, and I am only getting 1 point for the purchase. No additional 1 point bonus. It had been my understanding, starpoints purchase would be the same as SPG/Marriott room reservations - 2x on the AMEX side. Had I known only 1 point would be awarded, I would have used another payment card.

The extra point/$ shows up as a separate entry. I will show up on your SPG account, not on Amex statement. Check your SPG activity to see if it shows up separately.
