Promo: save 35% on ALL purchases & gifts of 5,000 or more Starpoints, to 14 July 2017

"Now through June 30, 2017, save 35% on all purchases of 5,000 or more Starpoints"

This must be approaching the best ever promotional offer for purchasing Starpoints.

That was a targetted mystery discount offer. Only a select number (i presume very few) of people got the 50% discount.

Was wondering in general is 35% off (US 2.275 cents) consider a good deal to purchase SPG points? I see the 50% mentioned above and I kind of recall I only got only 25%.

While the purchase seems to be process via points.com, does anyone know you get 5X if using a SPG AMEX or Marriott Visa?

I have 2248 SPG points and don't see any chances to collect more in near or far future, so I plan to transfer them. Considering that SPG adds 5000 points in case of transfer of minimum 20000 points, I wonder if present 35% off promo is good opportunity to buy missing 18000 points?
If I had 20000 points, I could transfer them for example to Avianca Lifemiles, where I would get in total 31250 miles: 20000 SPG points + 5000 SPG bonus + 25% due to present Avianca special offer. Is this worth of USD 409,50?

If in the UK, the 35% offer last year was much better because of the exchange rate at the time.

At 50% off it's a no brainer. At 35% off, with an uncertain future of starpoints value going forward, I don't think it's worth it unless you have a specific case of wanting to use the converted SPG points in the mileage currency of a particular airline in the near term.

This puts the cost of a 12k pts Cat. 5 redemption at $273. I’m currently looking at rates in September in Boston of $483 at the Westin Copley, and $348 at the Meridien in Cambridge (including taxes, as you have to consider when using points, no taxes are due). For NYC I get $418 at the Element Times Square West, and $514 at the Sheraton Times Square.

So all in all, worth it in those (extreme) scenarios.

Another newbie question, is there a limit how many "GIFT" points you allow? and also is there a limit how many "GIFT" points you can rec'd? i.e. can I get "GIFT" points from multiple SPG member?

--- added ---

never mind, found my answer. Each SPG member can only top-up their account 30K max a year, whether they are purchase by the member his/her-self or someone else gift it to him/her. A member can receive multiple "gift" points, just that the max is still 30K per year.

Agreed. I'm looking at rates of 450-570 for the premium Boston properties in mid July! Ouch...... great time to use points. Although you also have to consider how long your stay is to accrue points with the promo of 2x,3x as if you do use cash, you will earn more starpoints, especially if it is 3x.

If I buy 30k points and then my father buys 30k points, is he allowed to transfer them to me?

I can't see why you can't. And if you are the person that pay for your father's points anyway, you can just do the "GIFT" to your father's account. That is what I plan to do, just waiting for my new credit card to arrive so I can use this as part of my Sign-Up Bonus requirement

He should be able to do so, provided the terms and conditions for making a successful internal transfer are met.

A co-worker of mine did purchase some SPG with his Marriott VISA (Canadian) and did not get 5X the points.
