from spg.com

3.2. You will be considered an "Active Member" so long as (a) your Membership has not been cancelled (by you or us), and (b) you have had an Eligible Stay at a Participating Property within the previous 12 months, or (c) you have earned Starpoints by using a Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card during the previous 12 months. Starpoints resulting from transfers or earnings from Program affiliates do not count toward active status.(...)

3.3. If you do not remain an Active Member, we will close your Membership account and all Starpoints in the account shall be forfeited without notice.

3.4. (...) If you cancel your Membership, or if we close your account because you do not remain an Active Member, you may reapply for Membership at a later date, but you will not recover any Starpoints forfeited from your prior Membership.

I think the points do not expire, however, if you are not an "active member" as mentioned by pb9997, spg will close your account and take away your points.

SVO-converted Starpoints differ

Points acquired through StarOptions conversions (for Starwood Vacation Ownership timeshare owners) DO actually expire after six years. But they're the only kind of Starpoints that I'm aware have a ticking clock.

Also my understanding is any starpoints from SVO activity (timeshare presentation attending bonus, purchase bonus, explorer package bonus) has expiration (6 years).

But those points are deducted first when you use points for any awards.

This brought myself a new question - Starwood Lurker might be able to find out the answer - how one can know how many points out of the one's account balance are subject to expire (earned from SVO bonus/coversion), and when will they expire ?

I guess the SVO member would have to know when and how many of the Starpoints were added to their SPG account on a given date, subtract the redemptions since then, and if any are left, know that they are subject to expiration six years from the original date of issue.

Personally, I don't know of any easy way to differentiate on this side of things, so I doubt anyone else in SPG customer service is going to know an easy way either.

Sincerely,

Well, kind of expected...

Thank you anyway.

P.S. Sorry, I overlooked your input.

Expiration policy of SPG points?

I searched on this forum but didn't find an answer. What is the policy around SPG points expiration? My work schedule for the next few years will be strictly travel-free - will my points expire if there are no activities?

Well, there are countless threads about this.

There's also one other place to look: the SPG site.
http://www.starwoodhotels.com/prefer...spg_terms.html

In short, your points require STAY activity or SPG credit card earning every 12 months to keep your points from expiring. Stay activity could include a normal stay or it could be a meal (min. $10) in a hotel restaurant.

Don't forget the points devalue about 25% each year, so banking them is NOT a good idea! :p

Is the comment about devaluation a sarcastic comment, or is it literally true?

A reference to frequently revised award charts.

Starwood surely does wipe out your points if there is no activity for 12 months. My wife lost all of her Starpoints, plus her ability to log in to the spg website, after losing track and letting a year go by without any stays.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep my SPG Amex to keep the account active.
