Kinda odd *A earning question
 

Simply put, is there a way to earn *A miles on a carrier where you are not a member of the FF program?

I'm using Egypt Air to fly from Amman to South Africa. Other than this one trip, I doubt I will ever be on Egypt Air again, nor will I ever fly enough to earn any kind of tier status with them.

However, they are a full member of *A and I would like the trip and miles to go towards maintaining my gold status with *A.

Should I join the MS FF program just for this one trip or is there another way to earn *A status miles without doing so?

I did scan through the FAQ and didn't see it directly addressed (always possible I missed it though) so any guidance the gurus herecan offer would be appreciated.

What you ask is sort of the whole point of Star Alliance (or any of the major airline alliances for that matter), at least from a customer viewpoint.

As a matter of principle, you can earn frequent flyer miles for flights on any Star Alliance member airline in any member airline's frequent flyer programme. There are a handful of exceptions for very cheap tickets on certain carriers, and some programmes exclude more booking classes than others, but as a general rule, any flight on any *A carrier can earn miles on any *A programme.

That shouldn't be a problem at all, just give them the program and FF# when you book and you should get credit for the flight (if applicable). I've flown LH/LX/OS/SQ/TG and credited all of those to either BD or UA with no issues.

Yes, you can earn on any FF program of the *A group, provided you are earning on an eligible booking class (each FFP has different rules).

The OP has been on FT for over eight years and has posted over a couple thousand times. Furthermore, he says in the post (although it's not reflected in his mini-bio) that he has "gold status with *A". With that kind of experience, one really has to wonder where such a question as this is coming from.

Bouncer, this shouldn't be a problem provided that the ticket class is actually eligible for mileage accrual in your home FFP.

For the last three of those years, I've been in Iraq, with only a few long hauls a year (home or to consultations). I've simply not kept up with FFing because the only frequent flying I do is on blackhawks, and currently the US Army isn't a member of *A! :)

Because of this, I have to manage things a little differently. I do multiple long haul RT's, usually in C or F, and almost exclusively on UA. By doing that, I am able to maintain my Premier Exec in UA, and that maintains my Gold in *A.

Thus my relative unfamiliarity with other airlines and cross airline accountability of miles for Star Alliance and accrual of miles in a home program. The answer seems obvious to you, but you probably fly more miles and more carriers than I do. Then again, your flight crew probably isn't armed to the teeth either. :)

Anyways, thanks to all who answered my question. I'm going to present my UA/*A FF miles card to the fine folks at Egypt Airlines check in, and see if that causes their system to implode spectacularly! :D

Make sure you save your BP if your UAMP number doesn't appear on it. In fact, save it even it has the number just in case. You will need it to request credit if it doesn't work "automatically."
