Holding a flight for connecting passengers. How long is too long

As you yourself point out, you were only delayed by 25 minutes into your final destination. Did you miss a connection or suffer any significant economic harm as a result?

I'd be mad if they held the plane for 1 passenger, but it makes total sense to me to hold the last plane of the night for 36 passengers. Given how full flights are these days - I wouldn't be surprised if they wouldn't have been able to get some of the pax on flights for more than a day.

Asking for s friend: are BP scanners at security linked to airlines’ systems so that they can tell whether someone has cleared it and on the way to boarding area?

That’s part of the problem methinks. It means there’s less information for airlines to make a decision.
As for the original question: as a passenger, I’d like for the airline to hold the plane long enough for me to get on it. As a passenger on that plane, it’s “go” time as soon as I get on board
