Iran conflict, air space closures : effects on BA

Iran (and maybe Iraq) has closed its airspace, signalling imminent ME hostilities.

Are any BA flights yet affected?

I see BA 109 LHR DXB has taken off on time. It often passes over SW Iran but will doubtless be rerouted further south.

BA flights haven’t operated in Iranian airspace for years (2020 off the top of my head). Closure of Iraq will result in the usual reroute via Saudi.
BA or bust and spherehopper like this.

Aircraft are not using Iraq, and several aircraft including BA have re-routed in the air to avoid. The BA119 to BLR landed in Jeddah for more fuel, and is departing again on its way.

Edit: Iraq back open. Iranian airspace remains closed.

Nothing will happen. UAE made it clear to Trump that Dubai's position as trade and tourism hub doesn't fit to Iranian cruise missiles flying around.

Todays AUH arrival did that without much impact on duration, so hopefully that remains the case into/out of UAE and Qatar.

After we boarded the BA277 to HYD yesterday, the captain announced a last minute flight plan change and that we therefore needed to take on more fuel. We left an hour late and the flight was about 45 minutes longer than usual. Our route seemed to be a little further south than usual but not hugely different (I've not checked in detail on Flightradar).

While not specifically related to Iranian airspace, Id watch for impacts on BA services to TLV. Already LH group has cancelled nightime operations through next Monday. (2/3 FRATLV rotations are cancelled today, for example).

Let’s keep in mind the thread is specifically about the impact of the current situation on BA flights. Whether things are ‘happening’ or not, there are reports of disruption and delay.

Always worth keeping an eye on the Pentagon Pizza Index.
Unfortunately have 2 flights through DOH booked for next weekend but somewhat hopeful that the rhetoric has cooled slightly despite 'precuationary' evacuation of US personnel from Al Udeid AB.

Some rumours that BA amongst other carriers is cancelling flights to DXB tonight. I can’t see it yet. However, Iranian and Israeli airspace does seem to be clearing,

KLM apparently just suspended all flights to Israel, Saudi and the UAE.
Turkish Foreign Ministry has said there are indications Israel may be about to attack Iran.
BA105 currently delayed although BA109 still on the slate. BA107 was cancelled earlier today and so the return BA106 is also cancelled.

Not looking good...

Edit: incidentally, I saw the head of Lazard at Davos saying that something would happen in Iran within the next 2 days, that the US was just waiting for the Carriers to arrive ..
Edit 2: BA105 has pushed now.
Edit 3: Looks like BA105 has filed to fly over Saudi and avoid Iraq.
Edit 4: BA109 has also pushed, on time.

Quite interesting that EK has 380s and 777s flying through Iran right now

And QR also have flights going through Iran

What do they know that the rest dont? Cant imagine their appetite for risk is that much lower than say BA..

As earlier, there are EK and QR flights over Iran at the moment. But looking at Flight Radar there are also other airlines swerving to avoid the country. Difficult to be certain though. Cannot find anything about it in the news.

I am flying in the area tomorrow so do have a keen interest in this.

Am currently on a Finnair flight to HEL, connecting onto DXB and have received an e-mail from AY saying my DXB flight may take up to 1hr longer ‘due to flight route adjustments caused by the situation in the Middle East’ - so will keep this board posted.

The BA105 and BA109 LHR-DXB last night both went via a France / Egypt / Saudi routing which effectively zeroed any padding in the schedule but all DXB flights (including the lunchtime BA107) are planned for this weekend as of 0910Z Saturday.
I flew DXB-DOH-EDI last night and all the flights went the usual routings (including over Iraq for DOH-EDI) with staff at DOH airport having heard the gossip but non-plussed at the moment.

My feeling is that being state-owned airlines QR/EK/EY probably get timely warnings via the close working relationships Qatar and the UAE have with the US, Israel and Iran.
This morning there was a NATO E-3A sentry circling East of Cyprus which is a standard patrol corridor but it didn't turn its transponder off and head deeper into the region and has now returned to base at Trapani (TPS).
