Direct flights to HNL

Speculation that BA is considering direct flights to Hawaii.

Perhaps they misjudged the demand given all the TP runners?

Seems a bit odd IMO, why would this come before expansion in Asia (I’m thinking 777-300 to HND, 787 to BKK or ICN etc)? I get additional mainland US cities being added but HNL is hardly just a 8/9hr flight.

If nonstop this would be BA’s longest route at 7,237 miles - by 9 miles over SCL.

Indeed, and I suspect they will be charging a premium to earn a lot less considerably fewer TPs!

I'm sure not having to clear immigration and re-check luggage in the continental US (plus most likely fly a short-haul config plane onwards) would be very tempting for a lot of European visitors.

I’m guessing that Hawaii doesn’t require routing around Russian airspace like Asian routes from Europe currently do so it’s easier from a logistics and bureaucracy standpoint.

However it has a 2000 mile over-water stretch at the very end of the flight with few diversion opportunities, which I understand might require extra fuel reserves to be carried for the full length of a very long flight.

ANC presumably would need to clear US immigration and customs during the technical stop, only advantage is doing the second leg on a wide body instead of transferring to a narrow body as is usual from west coast to HI.

YXY might make sense.

Especially if BA could get Fifth Freedom rights to carry passengers locally between YXY and HNL. 😉

And there might even be a market for LHR-YXY: I see that Condor operates FRA-YXY seasonally.

I stand corrected - quite why the need for the rolled eyes, bit rude, not? It was just a matter that not everyone has swallowed the dictionary of IATA codes.

Do you know how long the current distance is between London and Tokyo?

I suspect it’s not that different. (Ah, about 1,200 miles, so yes, still rather more)

It's not the point of everyone knowing every IATA code, but by your own example LHR is the United Kingdom and MIA is Florida.....
