Avios to Hawaii?
I see that Amex currently gives 40% bonus on points transfers to Avios. Would it be possible to use Avios to book an American flight from mainland US to Hawaii?

If AA releases availability in Saver Awards (the one required for avios bookings) I don't see why not.

Yes, plenty of options on BA.com to book these with Avios; search from LAX/PHX

Is there a way to search without logging in? I'm not a club member yet.

Search on AA for Saver awards, they usually are the same flights available with avios.

One can search for "SAAver" award space to Hawaii on AA (and on AS too) at aa.com -- no log-in required. But the OP should make sure that
nonstop flights are available at the SAAver level: BA charges separately for each flight flown, so a connection will require more Avios than a nonstop.
