Checking Bags on a Segment Run

I'm flying YYT-YYC next week via a bit of a segment run: YYT-YYZ-YVR-YLW-YVR-YEG-YYC. It's an immediate turnaround in YLW so it's not possible to check the bags to YLW and then re-check them for the remaining flights to YYC.

Is it an option to check the bags so that they miss out on the YLW turn and instead are routed with me only on YYT-YVR-YEG-YYC? The flights are ticketed as YYT-YLW and YLW-YYC as part of the same ticket number. Normally I'd never check luggage on this kind of itinerary but I have no choice this time around.

I've never had success doing that. Your bags need to follow you.

YVR is the issue. There's no problem checking a bag across multiple fares, but you can't have the same airport on the tag twice.

I could always short check them to YVR and re-check to YYC after flying YVR-YLW-YVR but then the bags would be sitting out for the taking for 2+ hours. I wonder if the baggage office at YVR could help... It's times like this that having concierge access would be nice.

Why don't you short check them to YVR, then immediately recheck them in to YYC, then fly to YLW and back. You can drop bags up to 4 hours before departure, not sure if that timing works.

You'd also need to identify that for the YLW flights you are not checking a bag, although I assume the short check does that anyway.

I'd want a decent connection to attempt that... Leaving security and waiting for a bag can take a while

I'd definitely do that but the connection in YVR is only 50 mins .

Doable if your arriving flight into YVR isn't delayed. Besides, what good is a segment run if you don't run the risk of missing your connecting flight?

Irrelevant.

And since the destination is not the origin, it should be pretty clear the goal is to actually get somewhere while also accruing a bunch of AQS. No reason you can't combine a run into a real trip.

How did you swing getting YVR-YLW-YVR? Are any of these flights on AE ticket?

I don't think you have many options unfortunately, it all sounds a bit risky!

if you can shortcheck to YVR, maybe give the YVR baggage office a call and work something out with whoever's on staff at the time you're flying in. Don't forget about the 45 minute bag drop deadline at YVR!

Wouldn't be much use of a "segment run" if this was a reward ticket lol

@marke190 is a friend of mine! He has done segment runs by using AE for two or three of the legs in the past

Such as flying YYZ-YQB on AE followed by YQB-YVR on a paid fare in order to get more segments overall...

All of the flights are under the same revenue ticket with the journey split in YLW as YYT-YLW and YLW-YYC.
