Just received email from AA.

For a limited time, convert your hotel points into American Airlines AAdvantageŽ miles with participating partners, and you'll receive a 25% bonus on the number of miles you earn.

Looks like SPG Starpoints have the highest value and are the best one to use, if one wanted more AA miles.

2,500 StarpointsŽ = 2,500 AAdvantage miles + 25% bonus miles
For every 20,000 Starpoints transferred within the same transaction you'll earn 5,000 bonus Starpoints.

SPG is always the best value for conversion to begin with. Not sure how long that is going to last.

More Useless Miles

No Way. Starwood points still have value.Why would anyone want to exchange
them for useless American miles?

Its great for me, had 2800 SPG points and I never stay there. I could use them more and consolidate accounts by moving them to AA. Not sure how I feel about the other, I'll pass on those.

ugh

I'm so annoyed....I just did this on Monday! I needed a few extra miles to redeem and book so I converted Hilton Honors points that I would not be using before they expired....this would have netted me 5,000 extra AA miles.

I am sure that they will not honor this if i call but i am going to give it a shot anyways.

ugh so mad!

Marriott Hotel + Air Travel Package will convert 120,000 MR points (40,000 SPG points - you can transfer SPG to MR at 1 to 3) to 150,000 AAdvantage miles. That seems a bit better than a straight SPG to AAdvantage conversion.

FWIW, fine print does say 25% bonus applies to Travel Packages.

Note: Hotel + Air Travel Packages (TPs) with 120K miles start at 270K MR points which ALSO INCLUDES a 7-night (1 week) certificate at a category 1-5 hotel. It's a package that includes both miles AND a hotel certificate, hence the term "Package". My original paragraph above caused confusion and merely shows the exchange value for the points to miles portion. A full breakdown of the values of a category 1-5 Hotel + Air Travel Package are shown below:

150K MR points for 7-night hotel category 1-5 certificate
120K MR points for 150K AA miles
===
270K MR points

For many of us who use TPs, hotel certs in a categroy 1-5 hotel are useless. We actually exchange points for higher category hotel TPs. In my case usually category 8 or 9; think London St. Pancras Renaissance or JW Grosvenor House, or Sydney Marriott. Yes, these higher category Hotel + Air TPs require more points, 360K and 390K respectively for a TP that includes 120K miles and a 7-night hotel cert in a cat 8 or cat 9 hotel. A full breakdown of the valuations for the category 8 and 9 Hotel + Air TPs are shown below and also may be found on the Marriott.com page at the links provided:

Category 8 7-night hotel certificate with 120K AA miles + 25% bonus
240K MR points for 7-night hotel category 8 certificate
120K MR points for 150K AA miles
===
360K MR points

Category 9 7-night hotel certificate with 120K AA miles + 25% bonus
270K MR points for 7-night hotel category 9 certificate
120K MR points for 150K AA miles
===
390K MR points

I hope the additional information makes this post clearer.

I know these transfers aren't usually good for anything, but that's a hilariously abysmal rate.

So is that on top of the regular SPG bonus?

20k Starwood would equal 25k AA normally ("regular" 5k bonus).
So does that mean you get an extra 25% on top of the 20k? Or on top of the 25k?

Or none at all (one of those "can't combine, blah blah" disclaimers?)

a smaller amount of spg points could be useful if you need just a small bump up to the next business class category.

I have 52k AA miles. Need to get up to 57.5k for J award. I'll gladly transfer out 2500 spg points w/25% bonus. The rest i can get from shopping mall purchases and mall bonuses.

Agreed that it would probably be a bad idea to transfer a ton of spg points, but there are scenarios where it makes sense.

AA is giving 25%, they will receive 25K increments from Starwood.
25K SPG would be 31.25 AA miles. (So 20K SPG becomes 31.25K miles)

Is it not 270K MR --> 120K AA on travel package? Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing something. It's 270K MR --> 120K AA on travel package plus the 25% bonus of this offer (additional 30K AA miles) AND a 7-night certificate at category 1-5 hotel (150K pts when redeemed separately). Go to the link I provided in my previous post for details. Yes, you would want to have a use for the hotel certificate or else it would be pointless. No problem here as this is what I save points for.

As far as using AA miles, no problem redeeming JNB-CAI in CX J, DOH-HKG in QR F, and HKG-JNB in CX J. Actually my AA mile supply is low so it needs a little boost.

I agree 270K MR-->150K AA - not 120K MR to 150K AA
