But then again, this is probably the wrong place to ask why.

I think you just answered your own question!!

Hey, you know what, I'm with you. Now, if they said, get x miles and then you win, I'd be all for that. But not knowing how many miles would be needed to win, and then going and doing a whole bunch of trips just to rack up miles is a lot different.

I'll log about 35,000 during the period but I'll bet you folks still beat the pants off me.

First, brilliant marketing idea by UA. This is like the top 20k fliers promo by AA, but with a much bigger prize (and smaller winner's pool) at the end!!

An open-ended auction where uncertainty will just make the bidding (flight miles) go higher. I wonder what they do if you transition status from 2P --> 1P --> 1K during this contest period? I guess it'll have to be your starting status as of 12/15.

Golden opportunity for 2P's to make that SIN run pay!!!!

BTW, I think the highlights isn't the tickets, guys. It's the guaranteed hotel rooms plus Olympic tickets.

IMHO, the winning numbers will be mind-blowing. There are people out there who might take this promotion to lengths that we cannot even imgaine at this point. I'm talking 3x/weekly trips to Europe, Asia, or South America, or too many cross-country trips to count. On FT alone, we have witnessed:

1. An FTer earn a million miles buying pudding;

2. FTers earn a million bonus miles by flying nearly every airline in Latin America;

3. FTers fly around Thailand for ten days straight in order to make 1K on the cheap.

Top AA flier for a 4-month period, May-Sep '01, was ~350k actual flight miles, and that was with 9/11.

So the winner in the 1K circle could probably do up to 100k miles in 1 month.

I stand by my prediction that it will take at least 150,000 miles to win in the 1K category. I'm not sure that we'll ever know the figure. Will UA or the customer ever come forward with this info?

The difference, avek00, is that in the examples you cite, the outcome (the FF miles) was basically guaranteed. A rational decision could be made as to whether $X for pudding would be worth X FF miles.

This promotion is far more akin to gambling. Unless you have an incredibly magnanimous employer or rich uncle picking up the tab for 3x/weekly flights to Europe, etc. you could end up spending thousands and thousands of dollars for a prize of ($? - I haven't bothered trying to estimate) value that you might not even win.

But yes, nevertheless, there are bound to be people that will take this to mind-blowing heights.

United's website says that the value of the trip is ~$7,800.

Got this too. I will be doing a lot of flying but none of it will be revenue tickets, all award travel. I dont see the deals for this time of year, and I need to manage my exposure to UA mileage...

Just curious - Did anyone here win this? Or does anyone know the winning number of miles?
