I can't imagine sitting on a UA 744 in E (+ or-) transPacific.
Trust me its not pleasant E+ is a small improvement at least but really I would much rather they save their money on seat covers and carpet and put the seatback IFE in instead. IMHO,cosmetic changes are not what keeps customers coming back year after year. Well QF have also just announced their improvements ^

I'm no wimp and as I pay for my own travel I never buy C, but at 6'3" I'm literally beaten and bruised after 8 hours in E (+ or -) doing transAtlantic flights. I always seem to be seated behind a 5'nothing granny who has to jam her seat into full recline before we leave the tarmac. Even in E+ it usually hits my knees. Add to that the lousy 17" width on a 744 and I call that misery.

I thank god for row 21 on the 777, which I assume we'll be losing.

Employee Q&A:

http://www.upgradetravelbetter.com/w...mployee-qa.doc

Q. Anything happening to United Economy?

A. Yes, we're also investing in enhancements to our Economy cabin. The cabins will feature new ergonomic seat bottom cushions, seat fabrics, bulkhead and class dividers, consistent and updated row number lettering and new carpeting throughout the international fleet. The upgrade will include a lavatory refresh with new amenity holders and new flooring. Furthermore, on-demand audio/video and larger seat back video screens will be implemented on B777 aircraft during the second half of 2008. We are also implementing additional LCD screens on our B747 aircraft to improve viewability.
It would seem the B777s are going to be here long enough to justify the additional investment. The B747 and B767s ......

This would mean that if UA were to invest in a new fleet the 744s would be one of the first to go along with the 763s. They don't want to completely upgrade a fleet type that is on its way out.

Aren't most airlines looking at phasing out their 747s first before other models? The A380 seems to be a good replacement, once it's officially launched.

Apparently so. I just read this too in the "leaked" MS Word employee document. The 777 further tipped the scaled in its favor, after the gutting of the 747 E+ cabin. This is the news of the day, IMHO! ^ ^

I wonder why UA is not updating to AVOD in Y on the 747 or the 767 given the system is going into C on all those planes? Is it a technical issue, a marketing/business issue, or just a bad decision?

747 needs PTV in every Y seat which would cost too much $$$ to rewire and install in every Y seat.

Not sure why on the 767 though, as they have PTV's installed

Maybe because those screens are analog video input and would need control panels or something... still alot of new wiring/seats/screens in order to implement AVOD. Instead they keep a shelf for the 8mm tape player!

What will be best in Y is if those dang video boxes under the seat can get trashed in the 777 conversion!
