Hey all, I just opened a Flickr account so that I could link pics for FT trip reports and competitions.

This is all new to me; I uploaded two sets of six pics, from two Big Island beaches in South Kohala. Hopefully these get reveiewed then made public, per my settings.

Is Flickr okay with having pictures at the beach with people in them? Just curious about privacy and/or rights when one takes a photo containing other beachgoers.

I got bored just taking scenic shots, so tried to get some shots both of the beach and of people in action, like chatting etc. I may change some of them as the people shots may distract from the scenery/background. This was done with a non-wide angle lens so I found my proper scenic lens and may try these shots at a proper scenic angle.

Bizi,

As long as you're not commercially exploiting the images, you don't need to do anything. IIRC, basically all beaches on Hawaii are public, hence there's no "reasonable expectation of privacy" and you can show the photos publicly. If you wanted to use those pictures in an advertisement, you'd want to have a model release. Flickr's supposed to be non-commercial (although some people have got paying gigs for big companies based on their Flickr portfolios).

In other words, you're fine. Welcome to the group!

Oh my god, I don't think they care about anything. Just don't search for things like leather at work!

I love taking pictures of people taking pictures, more than I like taking pictures of my poor abused dog.

I have added a few (didn't want to bust the flickr FT bandwidth!) to the FT group from Kohala Coast beaches, but will upload (just to my BiziBB account):
  • last night's sunsets at A-Bay;
  • our beautiful neighbour church at Puako north of Waikoloa; and
  • our trip to Captain Cook / Kona for coffee! (favourite to date)

Okay, stupid question: how do I join the group?

Never mind. I figured that one out.

Next stupid question: how do I upload a picture to the pool?

Go to one of your pictures and double click on it. It will come up with several options above it, size and stuff, one of them is "Send to Group"

Yes, I think, in reply to the OP, but first a question:

Recently I created a Yahoo-hosted website (I had previously registered the domain elsewhere, but decided to switch it to Yahoo). I thought that it would be easy to link from the website to photos I had uploaded using Yahoo 360, but not so. I figured out how to incorporate links to the photos on my website, but unless I am mistaken, it seems as though anyone who clicks on one of those links is accessing not only the photos but my Yahoo 360 account, which is not what I had in mind.

Then I started hearing about Flicker, and I'm wondering if that would serve me (a) as well as Yahoo 360, for sharing photos with friends, and (b) better than Yahoo 360, for linking photos to my website.

I'd appreciate any insights and/or suggestions from any more website/ Flicker/ Yahoo-skilled people than me.

Flickr has no bandwidth limitations (aside from the amount you can personally upload unless you upgrade to a "pro" account), so don't feel restricted. I'm part of a pool that at the moment has 9300 members and 19,000+ photos.

As far as the number of pictures you can contribute to the pool, I haven't put any limits on that (although some groups do). Generally, what I do is I group all of the pictures from one trip into a set, and then contribute a few pictures from that set to the pool. Then, if you click on any of my pictures, you'll see the set it came from along the right side of the screen (along with any other pools it's in).

That tree in your Anaeho'omalu Bay shot looks pretty familiar - I got the other side of it for you last year:

Flickr's official policy is that it's not supposed to be used as an image-hosting site for other web pages (for stuff like avatars, icons, etc). You can put your photos from Flickr on another website, but each photo has to link back to its Flickr page. They provide code to do that when you click the "all sizes" icon above one of your images, like so:

Code:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bdjohnson79/504961859/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/218/504961859_b951193cbb_o.jpg" width="532" height="800" alt="Lake Shore Drive at Sunset" /></a>
If you want to put a picture from Flickr here on FT, you have to convert that to BBCode markup:

Code:
{url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/bdjohnson79/504961859/}{img} http://farm1.static.flickr.com/218/504961859_b951193cbb_o.jpg{/img}{/url}
(replacing {} with [] brackets)

If you just want to point friends to your flickr page to share pictures with them, that would work though.

Just to reply to myself, but in helping out with a Flickr question over in the in-flight photos I found an easier way to get Flickr-friendly BBCode for linking to images:

this script ^

On the "all sizes" page for your photo, it adds an extra text box with the BBCode to display the image and have it link back to the Flickr photo page, per Flickr's rules.

Need to be using Firefox with Greasemonkey to have it work.

BUMPED to remind FTers of our Flickr group.

I'm seeing lots of good photos in our contests here and invite all interested FTers to "Come on Over" and join you colleagues at Flickr.

Happy shooting!

OK... I just tried to join and clicked the link in Ben's signature and got a page not found error.

Any clues what I should do?

Hmmm... I just tried it and got to the FT Flickr page, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Perhaps you could try it again, or manually type in the URL, which is:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/ftphotos/

Good luck! We'd love to have you in the group!
