Red face Busted for helping myself to *one* can of club soda from the F galley

I have a question on whether or not it is appropriate for passengers to help themselves to drinks from the F galley and whether it is rude/inappropriate to do so or not.

On a recent flight I was very thirsty and pressed the call button to ask the FA for a drink but she was in her jump seat talking with the other FAs, eating leftover fruit salads from breakfast. So I went to the galley and got a club soda out of that plastic box that they are kept in (the drawer was open so I didn't actually open any part of the galley to get the can). Then I went back to my seat and poured the club soda into the glass cup which already had ice.

About 5 min later the FA comes up to me and says "Did you just help yourself to something from my galley?" I'm like yeah, I got this club soda so that you wouldn't have to make the trip. She's like "Well only FAs are allowed to serve drinks and it was rude of you to take it." To which I responded "Well maybe if you answered my call button instead of fussing around then passengers wouldn't have to get drinks for themselves." So then she says that I'm not supposed to be in the galley for "security" reasons. And I'm reaching for my pen to write down a name when my gf intervenes and is like "Charles, this isn't the airline lounge...he's very sorry!"

But I still don't think I should have to appologize for this? Any thoughts?? On other flights, especially international ones the FAs are like help yourself to drinks and water. Now I could see if I was raiding the liquor cabinet that would be a different story!

Charles, this could only happen to you .

You were wrong. And she was wrong. She should have responded to the call button, but you should get permission before going into the cart. Perhaps going to the galley (where she was seated) and asking there would have worked better. At that point she would either have gotten it for you, or invited you to get it. In the end, though, she was right, IMO, to chide you for that. Bad boy.

(Disclaimer: The above opinion assumes that this really happened)

Cheers.

In the days gone by (pre 9/11) domestically that might not have been an issue. Internationally in the days when Snack Attack existed, again we were welcomed into the galley.

Today, you threatened their space and their security tasks. You could have been planting something dangerous in the drinks cart. I personally agee you were wrong.

Ding ding.. no answer.

I would then have walked up front to where the FA's were sitting and stood there and ASKED them for what you needed. If they groused (like cann't you see I'm on break) then you could have offered to 'can I get it myself'. The FA may or may not have agreed at that point.

I think your assumptive intrusion of their galley was wrong.

On 767-300 when I have been stuck on the EF side .. you have to cross thru the galley to get to the lavs. I make it a POINT on my first trip to the lav of locating the purser (or at least senior) and ASKING them if I may come thru the galley to use the Lav. 100% of the time I get an OK (mostly with a Thank You for asking) .. ONE time I got a 'YES as long as you wear shoes'. She then explained that there may be broken glass on the galley floor and did not want me to cut my tootsies. So of course I obeyed this request.

Personally had a more dominant matron been on your flight, I could well imagine you would be taken into custody at the end of the flight for 'interfering with flight security operations'. WOW would that have been a post!

KEEP OUT OF THE GALLEY!

I think you were 95% correct. I would have stood in front of the drinks and asked the FA "I rang the call button and it went unanswered, may I help myself?" At least your displeasure with their service will be known.

This one I believe. The $15,000 laptop that the French woman damaged at check-in is the caliber of MD's stories I don't believe. I am surmising that s/he goes out there to make drama happen.

FA made big issue out of nothing, so you were wrong but she could have politely mentioned it for future reference. Girl friend sound smart, are you sure you want to keep her.
