My first ever flight was a LHR to BOS flight from T4 in a 777. I was lucky to fly as there was a winter storm a few days before in Boston and I had a no one next to me in Economy. This was, as far as I remember, in 2004. Very fond memories. Of course no lounge at this point as I was a student in the middle of my Uni exchange programme to Coventry University.

I first started using T4 on a regular basis back in 1989. T4 opened in 1986. In the early days, there were a few shops, but not too many. As time went by, more and more shops restaurants and bars opened. That part was horrible.
I was often travelling long haul, as the job I had required rather a lot of global travel, and the Company paid for me to travel in either business or First. The Company that I worked for was a top customer for BA. I reached Gold for about 13-15 years. (The only downside of that was that once I had the points to re-new, I immediately tried other airlines, so I did not earn enough for GfL.)
My memoreis of T4 were mainly of the Concorde/First Lounge, which was normally excellent, with much better reds and whites than BA gives you now! I stopped trying the various whiskeys in late 89 after a warning from my Doctor!
Perhaps my memories of T4 are confused by time, but I remember a place which was so much better than T5. It was never as good as Singapore, but nowhere is!

The thing I probably missed the most from the Concorde lounge in T4 was the cigar room. Latterly, after smoking was banned inside, I recall it being turned into a children's play area. The same, I think, at JFK T7.

I really liked the F lounge in T1 too. All the F lounges felt so much less crowded back then.

I remember probably the first time in T1 flying up to Scotland. I was probably 9 and my sister and I were dispatched to relatives while my parents completed the house move. We were skyflyers and it was all rather fun. I just remembered the departure pier was really long and tubular.

I think I may have flown from T4 once in 2005 to SFO. First time in a 747 off to campervan round the states.

After that pretty T5 solid. It's remarkable that I know people who still associate T5 with being a disaster due to the teething problems on opening.

Slightly off topic does anyone know if there's ever a chance to see inside what's left of T1. I have done the Templehof tour and it was one of the best things I've seen. Especially the arrivals hall.

My memory maybe failing but when they added long haul to T1, wasnt there a champagne lounge? I recall a large round bar and basically making the most of my connections as a gold card holder.

it could of course been T4!

Yes, there was a round champagne bar in the T1 F lounge.

BA to CDG and AMS were always in T4 from opening. I recall KL to AMS also operated out of T4 but not sure about AF.

I recall there was also an obscure other airline out of T4....it was either to Malta or Cyprus I think.

Oh how I hated the trek from Victor Pier to arrivals.

KLM definitely flew out of T4 in the 1990s, they used a mix of 737s and Airbus A310s at peak time. NLM used Fokker 28s to Rotterdam before they became KLM Cityhopper.

Paris was from T4, as has already been ascertained, a lot of 767s got used during peak times. When BA first took delivery of the 777, they operated to Paris on crew training routes, I got a staff travel ticket to Paris specifically to get a flight on a 777.

I remember flying into LHR one day from Dsseldorf and due to high winds, we landed on runway 23 (long since withdrawn) which was right next to the new Terminal 4, must have been about 1988/9.

Terminal 1, I only remember the large domestic departure lounge with the multiple gate doors. Wasn’t there a lounge up some stairs from that large departure area at one time? I was mostly travelling on staff standby tickets so never got to experience any of the old lounges. Those were the good old days of Boeing 757s up to Newcastle and everyone getting served a meal in economy, on a 50 minute flight.

I also remember the aluminium tubes that Aer Lingus used and BA did towards the end of T1.

When T5 opened, I was still using T1 as some of us were travelling up to Glasgow working on the new ATC centre at Prestwick. We switched to BA and T5 after BMI lost one of my friends hold baggage on the way up to Glasgow. Debbie McGee was on the same flight and I told my mate that the ghost of Paul Daniels had spirited his case away; “and that’s magic”.

Systems were not as sophisticated in T4 for sure - around 1995. On my first ever long-haul flight my (now) father in law lent us his silver card, and due to my (then) girlfriend sharing his surname - of course - admission to lounge followed.

I might be wrong but was T1 domestic baggage reclaim originally accessible by anyone?
I'm also trying to visualize the check-in, I seem to recall a large rectangular area with a balcony which had a few eateries, maybe including Harry Ramsden's

Prior to T5 in addition to T1 and T4 BA also had a grand total of one flight a day out of T3 - Miami mostly.

Paris, Amsterdam and Athens if I recall correctly

Given the runway congestion at LHR, it is fascinating that BA flies 4x A32x's daily in summer to LCA (+ a LGW service); but sure if convenient from a timing perspective.

I miss the 767, it was so much more comfortable, even full at 255pax with another aisle and 6WCs than a A321 with 220pax and 3WCs.
