787-9 from SFO to KOA on Feb 22nd

Was looking through the schedule because I am a nerd, and saw a 787-9 for the morning SFO-KOA-SFO route, which is quite interesting. The SFO-KOA has a lot of open J, but the way back has only 3 seats for sale. Glad they are finally operating new widebodies to KOA from SFO (I know this for only a day). Hope they continue this trend for the summer

I would like to lobby for this on another date: March 26 since I am already booked in first for that flight.

How are they marketing PremiumPlus? Economy Plus? I ask as my travel companion is booked in Eceonomy Plus....

HA! I would like to lobby this for some dates in June as I'll be headed there as well and booked in J! PremiumPlus is just marketed as Economy Plus, just like the SFO-HNL 77W flight.

Weird one-off for sure. It's coming right back so it's not like UA has further plans for it in KOA. Perhaps a very senior pilot's retirement flight?

KOA-SFO looks rather full on EF.

The week prior is a pretty popular week for school winter breaks in some parts of the US due to the President's Day holiday.

100% this! Also, the used to operate 772HD's on this route (still do but during different times), so they can def fill Y no problem. J on the 772HD is constantly sold out weeks in advance before the flight (and going for 3k+ a ticket), so I don't see why they don't have more widebodies on this route!!!!!

I don't think so, it's a popular time to visit Hawaii and they fill 772HD's no problem to KOA from SFO - looks like they wanted more J seats on this day as it's nearly booked!

How times have changed. KOA gets 753s, 739s, 777s, this one off 789 and OGG just gets Max 8s besides ORD and DEN.

I also always wondered why OGG doesn't get the 772HD from SFO. It used to have 767's I think and other widebodies, but not 100% sure

They definitely used to fly widebodies SFO-OGG. Flew the 772HD a few times there in 2023, and a few Polaris 772s around 2021.

thanks for confirming - not sure why it went away (I feel like there would be demand)

The Polaris planes were due to a lot of international routes not operating yet post-Covid. This was during 2021-2022 aka Hawaii CPU golden-era.

I wonder what the bedding situation is - is it prob the same as the 772HD? It was pretty good last summer when I flew it to KOA. I flew IAD-SFO a couple of days ago in J on the 787-8, and having a lie flat but no pillow or blanket was not great tbh

I too remember taking the 777 HD KOA-SFO in the past. Boarding via air stairs its a striking plane up close. Bigger than the thatched hut aka terminal it feels like
