Upgrade cost on JAL premium economy to business FRA-TYO?

How much does it usually cost to make a successful bid for an upgrade from premium economy to business on Japan Airlines FRA-TYO?

And can you bid for a double upgrade to business from economy from LHR: how much would that be, if so?

I have never made a bid, I find that the minimum pricing is just too high to make it a serious option.

Thanks. What are the kinds of minimum prices they set? How do they differ from how you measure the value of a Y+ to J upgrade?

So are there other methods of upgrading, like using miles? Can you do so as a non-elite member of JAL Mileage Bank?

And is it possible to transfer other kinds of points or miles into JAL miles, and if so, which ones?

Upgrade using miles are possible but require certain (higher) fare classes. Have successfully done Economy->Business upgrades using miles in the past. My understanding is any JMB member can upgrade using miles. Elite levels may come into play when waitlisting for an upgrade.

The only transfer partner that I know of is Marriott but the conversion rates are not that great.

I find that the Y to PY minimum bids are usually the same as day of departure upgrades, and I mostly find them not worth it.

It seems to me that the minimum bid plus what I paid for Y, often put me ballpark what I could have paid for J initially, except I only get Y earnings on the ticket. The point of the bud is of course to monetize the J cabin, but as it is under the airline control and anyway unsold tickets a certain discount to the passenger should be there as well, and not s discount on full fare J.....

Well, if it's the same as the same-day price for PY, I would go for it as the bid comes with lounge access (for non-status passengers) and you can confirm it ahead of time.

True, I just don't find the same day process attractive either. And who is to say that you get it at a minimum bid?

Won’t hurt to place the min bid if you don’t mind paying for the same day price

What kind of numbers are we talking here? Not having flown these sectors or seen the bidding process I have no idea.

And how are day of departure upgrades different? Are they the equivalent of what British Airways calls AUPs? Does JAL also do an equivalent of what BA term a POUG?

Context for those terms here:

The only differences are same-day upgrade does not come with lounge access and the costs are fixed.

JAL has no equivalents to these. The bid upgrade is run by Plusgrade, similar to what Lufthansa offers.

Day of departure is only from Y to PY.

Okay, thats helpful to know. But I still have no
idea about what kinds of numbers were talking here, for either Plusgrade bids or day of departure upgrades!

$250? $500? $750? $1000?

The BA threads I linked show a route by route breakdown with data points for recent dates people have been offered such upgrades. Any equivalent here on FT or elsewhere for JAL?

Once you get the email, you can see the minimums for the bid. The day of departure PY upgrades are in the link in the post above.

Very few people seem to pick up on the bid upgrades, so there is no experience posted so far in the forum.

I've bid the minimum ($500) for PE->Business, FRA->TYO. Not sure if It'll be successful yet.
