Oct 11: EWR ground stop due to equipment (radar) outage?

Currently on board flight at Newark, taxing for departure.

Looks like all departures stopped.

FAA site is indicating ground stop due to equipment failure.

Any one have info?

Seeing a couple planes land, but not nearly normal volume.

Pilot just announced all departures stopped due to a radar outage.

We are heading back to gate.

Ugh.

Seems a few inbound aircraft are landing, but typically they're circling around a bit before doing so.

UA41 FCO-EWR looks like it doesn't know where to go.
Good luck departing.

edit:
AF62 CDG-EWRJFK is diverting.

Listening to ATC. Apparently the equipment issue has been resolved and departures are resuming.

No idea why we were the only plane to return to the gate, losing our place in line.
Might have something to do with the announcement that now we are refueling. ?!?!

Maybe a new routing? Can’t believe we didn’t have enough spare fuel to wait stationary for 20 minutes on taxiway.

Could be a new routing, or it could have been a crew being cautious. In cases like this, ATC may essentially be telling the crew they have no idea how long an issue will last. Maybe the crew decided to bite the bullet, and go back for fuel before everyone else in the line does.

Could have been a brilliant decision, if the outage had lasted longer, and there were a bunch of flights returning for more fuel.

That's a judgement call on the part of the Captain in consultation with his F/O(s) and dispatcher.

The problem is that nobody knows how long the delay will be and often it's quicker to go refuel sooner, being one of the first to do so, than waiting longer then being at the end of a long line waiting for a fuel truck.

It also depends on how much extra fuel you had to start with. Sometimes you have a good bit of extra while others it is less due to the particulars of the flight and the weather conditions enroute and at your destination.

Seems like a normal day for EWR / PHL Tracon... Sorry for those that diverted -- that is SUCH a PITA.

Ah I was wondering what was up, since EWR seemed even messier than usual for a non-summer, non-winter afternoon.

My flight home has been bouncing -- first waiting for aircraft and crew, moved up a bit "just" waiting for aircraft, then slid back because crew "worked more than the FAA will let us work them" which isn't of itself that unusual for Newark but in the club practically everything on the board was yellow but for a plethora of reasons (crew, equipment, weather)... That would explain this.
