related thread -- Deadline to cancel/redeposit award ticket...?

You can be marked as a non-show at T-15 minutes (domestic) and T-30 minutes (international) and earlier a handful of airports (T-60). This will certainly happen when the flight is "closed" which can be soon afterward. Note this assumes you have checked in. Check-in deadline is 30-45 minutes domestic and 60 minutes international, again there are a few even earlier exceptions.

Having checked in does not impact the ability to cancel but it may provide a few more minutes

Quick question: United publishes some fares marked Economy (fully refundable), how late can I cancel in order to get it refunded with no charge? My sister is pregnant and is supposed to due next week. She’s had a couple of false alarms in the past month. However, because of my job, I cannot leave days in advance. That’s my dilemma.

I have an international regular economy (not Basic Economy, not Refundable Economy) one-way US to Asia ticket that I may need to cancel last moment. To receive full amount paid as future flight credit, is there a deadline prior to departure? Can I cancel two hours prior?

Yes, Yes

While you can theoretically wait till the GA closes the flight, a few hours prior to scheduled departure is less risky.

How late is too late to cancel?

We have a short connection, 45", in GUM. 154, Island Hopper, scheduled to arrive at 6:15pm to 193, Manila Hopper, scheduled to depart at 7:00pm.

They are on separate reservations. The Manila Hopper has fare rules:
Additional charges may apply for changes in addition to any fare rules listed.;NONREF/0VALUAFTDPT

Cancel reservations before the scheduled departure time or TICKET HAS NO VALUE.
Obviously if 154 is late, I'm going to cancel the Manila Hopper before we leave TKK, or as soon as we land in GUM. But, I need advice if we're cutting it close.

The question is: The fare rules state "Cancel reservations before the scheduled departure time or TICKET HAS NO VALUE."

If I remember correctly, we have to be at the gate 30" before departure or we get offloaded. If we do get offloaded, but it's before scheduled departure, can I still cancel the reservation for a refund?

In practice, if United cancels for you (due to no-show or failure to check in), the coupon will be voided.

You may be able to plead for mercy if you show up on the delayed flight.

Given it's a non-refundable fare, why would you expect a refund? Do you main will it retain value as a credit?

As far as obtaining a refund is concerned, it may be important for you to note that you do not have a connection at GUM, short or otherwise. You have two separate reservations and two separate tickets.

If you have checked in, to retain future credit (for a nonrefundable ticket), you need to cancel before the gate agent closes the flight. You can be off loaded and still maintain credit. You will also be off-loaded if you do not check-in by the required time. Closing for domestic flights is generally coincides with closing the door, 10 minutes before scheduled departure.

If your'e offloaded, you've no-showed and generally haven't met the requirements to cancel a nonrefundable fare before departure. However, there's leeway there, especially for an agent. If you arrive late into GUM and miss the flight by less than an hour or two, they'll likely just put you onto the next MNL flight.

First off, clarification - I realize I have two separate tickets and not a "connection." Sorry about the improper terminology.
Second, I thought the Manila Hopper was a fully refundable trip, but I must have made a mistake when booking, and see that it is not refundable. That said, we would only be looking to retain the value in a FFC.

I think I'll just cancel it at exactly 30" before departure if we're not at the gate by then. Obviously if we're 30" late or more leaving TKK, I'll cancel it then. I'll have a FSM SIM card and will have data services while on the ground.

Thanks all for helping me think this through.
