Thank you for your comments, and particularly for the observation regarding the J seats. For some reason I was under the impression that the seatwells on the 747-8i were slightly bigger in the non-bulkhead rows - but apparently not. If that is the case, I'll probably go with MUC and the 2hr connection. We are on the UD of the 747-8i for our outbound flight.

I'm a big 747 fan, but I have a stricter tolerance for short connections when connecting to an important segment, just because the magnitude of problem is bigger if you misconnect. 1h00 is fine for that connection on a good day, but it becomes pretty dicey if literally anything goes wrong. There is also the secondary document check for the USA which tends to slow things down a little bit more too.

Is 85 minutes reasonable for a Schengen to non-Schengen transfer?
I have a United Saver business reward that includes legs from ZRH to FRA 09:35 -- 10:35 then a flight to LHR at 12:00. Also I think the arrival gate is ASW which means a bus from tarmac to the concourse rather than a jetway. That plus the UK passport control line I'd need to get thru has me worried. Will my "business class" ticket help at all with the passport control line? Because of the tarmac bus sitting in the front won't help at all timewise.
I'm not that concerned about luggage because this is at the end of a trip so if my bag shows up two days late it's no biggie.

Well I've got the final leg from LHR to IAH at 13:40 so that won't work. I guess they could put me on the FRA-IAH flight at 14:00. Still wondering if I should pony up the 95K miles to take a more convenient route thru ORD or EWR. Or pony up 17K miles and get up really early to go thru Istanbul.

If you have a connection on the same ticket then I would really not stress it. 85 minutes is a reasonable time in FRA and worst case scenario you get a direct flight instead. Not at all a problem IMO

Well my ticketing says I have 60 mins, not 55. But at least that transfer has a jetway, and is in the same terminal (to my knowledge). Also hoping a "fast-track" or business class security line opens up before May

If you are not travelling until May 2022, schedules may change and your connections could become easier or impossible. At LHR T2 LH flights arrive in T2A and United flights leave from T2B. The two concourses are connected by an underground passage with moving walkways but it will take 10-15 minutes after clearing transfer security depending on your departure gate.

140min connection at FRA enough?
US passport holder here traveling US-FRA-FCO on LH/LH with a 2 hr 20 min connection at FRA. Is this enough time for transit? Are there additional Covid protocols there that might make the connection too tight? We have gotten the vaccine.
