In other "improvements", my e-Upgrade summary is now presented in a microscopic font.

We must be crazy to think that such a thing would actually work on United.com!

Per the site, SWU can be used on:
Business : C, D
Economy Region 1: Y, B, E, M, U, H, Q, V, W,
Economy Region 2: S, L, T, K
I take this to mean that you get to use a SWU on basically all fares! Sounds good to me!!!

I was able to upgrade someone's LAX-JFK flight. One thing that concerns me is that after the upgrades was succesfull it alowed my to print the person's original "E-Ticket Receipt and Itinerary". That contains all kinds of information that I don't think the sponsor should have access to. At least the credit card number is XXXXed out for most of the digits.
I saved copies of each step and it worked fairly well. The CR1 is now shown in reserved state in my "E-Upgrade summary" page.

Be aware that when you click the 'Request upgrade' button at the bottom of the page, upgrades are actually immediately requested, and potentially confirmed.
Sure enough, that makes sense and I may be a bit dumb, but I expected a confirmation page (the "old" upgrade tool had such a page).
After mistakenly applying a *paper* SWU (which I dont have) to a flight segment, I called United to downgrade. I was told that "Sir, if you did not have a SWU the system would not confirm the upgrade". I attempted to suggest that the system would have a hard time verifying how many paper upgrades I have... Well, you know the rule -- the next agent has been more helpful

Here is another thing that I don't like about the new feature. In the itinerary I upgraded there was already an upgrade request pending for the return flight. Next to it was a "Cancel Upgrade" button. I did not try it but I don't think the sponsor should be allowed to cancel an upgrade request previously made by the sponsoree.

They have changed the online easy-"chicken" as well. It now show you your balance for 500,CR1 and SWU and askes you which one you want to use in a drop down.

What about us 1Ps and 2Ps? :)
While it is both nice and proper that UA instituted these upgrade features for UGS and 1K customers, all of who have multiple forms of paper certs to upgrade transcon and international itineraries for both themselves and others (time to start ingratiating myself with some 1Ks for my LHR and SIN trips
), it would have been nice if they had also allowed 1Ps and 2Ps (and UGS and 1Ks) to be able to request mileage upgrades, as well. We still have to call the desk for those, but at least UA is nice enough not to charge us $5 or $10 for the privellege, so we shouldn't be too bitter.

Thanks for your generosity in upgrading the other FTer. If I am ever able to help you in any way, rest assured I will not hesitate to do so.
Well done. ^
