Not worth it for one drink, but I could see the reason if you want five or six.

Though I have to imagine it's not hard to find people who have used day passes many times a year, and then figure trace them back to the sources.

Aren't the Chase Passes fully transferable? I give them to my son all the time

Is there real risk to buyers of one time passes from the black market? I figured, possibly wrongly, that it is only sellers of them that get into trouble with UA if caught.

There have been reports of used or expired passes being sold.
And a chance of UA voiding passes if UA could determine they were sold.

Welp. Got burnt by an eBay transaction. Bought two passes on June 2 with an expiration date of 8/26/2023. Tried using them today, and the UA Club agent said the card had been canceled. Fortunately, I had two backup passes.

Whenever I sell mine on ebay I make a point of saying that the card has not been canceled. I have even had people ask me to confirm that I did not cancel

The seller was mortified. They claim they never canceled the card, and they will refund my money ASAP. The seller is trying to figure it out with Chase Visa.

Edited to add: it probably helped immensely that the seller also has an eBay storefront, so a negative feedback would've been a bad look. If it was some random person who uses eBay once a year, I probably wouldn't have gotten such a pleasant resolution.

As long as you can trust the seller and United hasn't cancelled their passes for selling them. Purchase at your own risk.

A while back i had bought a couple passes on eBay when I had a flight approaching. I ended up upgrading my flight so I didn’t need them after all. I held onto them for maybe 10 months and recently tried to use them. They were rejected. The club rep said that if the credit card that they were associated with got closed, that would invalidate the carp passes.

fortunately for me, I contacted the seller who was an upstanding individual and refunded me the full amount I paid. The passes were not expired and should have worked, but didn’t. The seller did the right thing and I’m grateful to them for that. In the future, I don’t think I’ll buy more off eBay. Just too risky.

Do it at the risk of losing your MP account, with absolutely no recourse.

Over the past 6-7 years, I have purchased probably 50 one-time passes off eBay. I've only been burned once (this year) in a very similar fashion to RoseB above; the seller was mortified and claimed the card was still active, and I also got a prompt refund. Buying passes off eBay always carries risk, but I'm comfortable with it. Two tips I would offer are to purchase one-time passes only within a few days of travel and never pay more than $30 for one pass.

Given similar prices, would you prefer ones with longer expiration from purchase over those expiring soon?

Just seeing that the card being cancelled would invalidate the passes, I would guess I'd want passes expiring next year since they are less likely to have just cancelled the card?
