Daughter has chicken pox - can she fly?
Hey everybody...
My daughter and her mother are on BA15 departing on 22 Jul. However, my daughter has chicken pox, and recently came out in the spots.
Does she need a medical certificate or something similar to say she's fit to fly?
My intuition suggests that, now she's exhibiting outward signs, she's no longer a threat to other children and it shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks in advance.
MikeinSIN
PS if anybody's on this flight, she's the 4 year old Eurasion travelling with her HKG mother... just so that you can maintain a wide berth!!
PPS in line with her developing vanity, she refuses to brush her teeth in front of the mirror. "Mummy, my chicken pox is not nice. I don't want to see it"... [it sounds cuter in Cantonese!!

Chicken Pox: Passenger must have a letter/certificate from their doctor stating that they are no longer infectious - no other wording will suffice. No spots must have appeared within 6 days of their scheduled travel

Sweetheart, if she is still showing spots DO NOT LET HER FLY. It simply is not fair on her - or others - but by then it is probably academic given how long she will have had it.
The air is very dry,and that does not help any skin conditions whatsoever. She may be wriggly and uncomfortable, poor little mite. If we saw a child covered in spots, we would not let it rest there. Some kids, I know do not have many spots, but if they are visible on her face not only will she know it, but so will the crew.
In your place I would go and see the Doctor (you should do anyway for Chicken Pox), and tell him exactly what you intend to do. if he/she says that she is fine to fly and certificates her - then fine.
Of as much concern, have you or your wife had it?

ahh chickenpox, that brings back memories - my friend Jason had them, and all the kids in the village were despatched for a sleepover athis house very promtly. I told my much younger brother that rubbing my dads aftershave (Jazz) on the freshly scratched sputs would stop the itching permanently - he is a gullable prawn

I found the info on Chickenpox in the AskBA system on their website (clicked on 'Contact Us'), and ScottC is right. Their official line is: "Information from British Airways Health Services states you cannot travel until six days after the last spot has appeared, and then at that point you will also need a letter from your GP/Doctor stating that you are no longer infectious."
Hope she's much better....they start feeling well very quick although their spots linger....

Hi everybody...
THANK YOU ALL for taking time to help me out...
Much appreciated. Truly..
The low down now is that, having spoken with the local apothecary, Nicola has been okayed for the flight. It seems that the spots are already disappearing, so she'll be well enough by 22 Jul... a letter has been duly scribbled, and, no doubt, will prove to be TOTALLY illegible. (This ADDS to it's authenticity, I suppose!)..
Once again, THANK YOU for your help..

MikeinSin, My Love, I hope that she will be fine.
The only sad part now is to know that you are well and truly spoken for (as am I!!).
Hugs to you all

Just to let you know that BA were very kind and let Nicola fly on Monday night...
By all accounts, the flight was better than the recent SQ trips they had made...
However, when I met them at SIN, I thought my little princess had SMALLPOX... her mum had put camomile lotion all over the spots, in copious servings!!
Anyway, just to say thanks again...

PS Pucci, next time I fly BA, I'll be sure to put a mention to your hairbrush in my PNR.. I know it's the NEW secret code for SFU!

[And I never even used the "u" swear word!

Anyone who knows SFU, is Suitable For Unlimited anything in Pucci's book!
I am so glad all went well and that she is getting better. Calomine lotion should have gone out with leeches, but there is really no alternative and it is most effective.
One day I will tell you what I did with Him Indoors, but my blushes (not flushes BiBi) would alarm you!
Hugs
