And apparently, as ridiculous as it may sound, AY tries to explain that these are "extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided by any reasonable measure".

I would find it hilarious that they try to compare their own mismanagement of crew matters with war or weather, but I don't since I'm affected. I got offered a €50 gift card instead of €250 cash for a cancelled (international) flight operated by Nordic Regional, reason for cxl shortage of crew.

My initial thought was that they are ramping up the feeder flights from Europe and thus have exhausted the crew resource and are solving that problem bby cutting back on Domestic.

But while domestic ASK has been high the last months, Europe ASK has fallen sharply nov-jan. With capacity on Europe down some 300 million seat km, it is difficult to claim that is the reason. (The complete domestic operation capacity is 130 million seat km)

So one still wonders why they suddenly lack pilots?

There must be an exceptional Finlandemy of the common cold. Who could have predicted it would happen in winter?!

The Finnish press has covered this surprisingly well. Norra has employed too few pilots and relied on them coming to work on their days off when their colleagues fall ill. The unions say the crew is overworked and the company says they need more pilots. The press state this concerns domestic flights, but in my case it was international.

Interesting, thanks for posting. Exactly what I thought could have happened, now no need for speculation.

Not really a new frequency, but AY will as of today codeshare OK flights on the routes HEL-PRG, PRG-BBU and PRG-OSR. I'm guessing the first one could be of interest here.

I assume AY code means points according to AY table and tier bonus, but only to AY+ program. Flights will not earn on any other OW program.

Perhaps it has already been reported here, but Toronto has been axed. I tried to buy a ticket there, but the only possibilies with AY were via ORD or NYC.

New Wetleases as of May 2016 =>
====================================
"Airberlin will operate some Finnair flights within Europe between May 2016 and April 2017.

Due to operative reasons Finnair leases two almost brand new Airbus A321 aircrafts with pilots from German airline airberlin between May 2016 and April 2017. During that time some Finnair flights to and from Vienna, Düsseldorf, Copenhagen, Paris, Dubrovnik, Split, Ljubljana and Malaga will be operated by airberlin.

The whole cabin crew comes from Finnair and the service concept (meals and inflight sales) is the Finnair service concept.

The flight schedules remain the same, and this flight operator change does not require any action from the customers.

When you buy tickets through finnair.com, the operating airline is shown on the ‘Select Flights’ page. If you have already made a booking on any of the flights affected, we will inform you about the change in operating aircraft in pre-departure emails. Please check from Manage booking that we have your current contact information.

Due to the change in flight operator:

you can change your flight to a Finnair operated flight for dates between May 2016 and April 2017 according to seat availability and your ticket validity (same destination).
you are entitled to a ticket refund if you choose not to travel.

If you wish to change or cancel your flight, kindly contact Finnair Customer Service. We also serve our customers on Twitter @FinnairHelps and on Finnair Facebook pages. Finnair Passenger Rights.

We are sorry for the inconvenience that the flight operator change may cause you."

Yeah, A333 capacity moved to MIA and YYZ is history for now.

HEL<->PRG was already mutually code-shared before OK dropped the route. It's just a return to the earlier situation. I did earn AY points on OK metal booked as AY code way back (in 2007).

Presumably earnings to AY+ will be km-based for AY codes, and nil to other OW programs.
