Usually, you drop to Gold, and are offered a chance to buy back Platinum for (e.g.) 25K points. Be careful: those points are sometimes deducted from your Lifetime Points, but they shouldn't be and you can get them back.

There's nothing in the T&C that says those points don't count towards lifetime totals (as they do say for transfers, etc.) So those points should count, and deducting them is an error that can be fixed.
