Stand-by and Rebooking fee

I would like to see if anyone has experience in having stand-by in a earlier or later flight with CX and asked to pay for a rebooking fee (if applies).

In my understanding, there should be no fee applied if having a standby at the airport for an alternative flight; however, I have heard that CX charged for that once. Therefore, I would like to see if anyone can share their experience to us.

Thanks.

I have been put on earlier flight before. I arrived at the airport early, the check-in staff in TPE asked me if I'd like to fly on an earlier flight to HKG. There was no rebooking fee applied. My guess would be that if there were empty seats on the flight you want, they shouldn't be too hassle about doing this for you.

I heard about rebooking/change fees too, but it never happened to me. The last time I did that was at TPE last September.

For those 'shuttle' flights, e.g. PVG, PEK, TPE they will let you take any earlier flight for free if there are seats at check-in. You can just ask the agent if she can put you on an earlier one.

Likewise if you miss your flight they'll rebook you on the next on free.

Not sure about the less frequent flights.

Wirelessly posted (Xperia Z: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 4.3; C6903 Build/14.2.A.1.136) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/33.0.1750.136 Mobile Safari/537.36)

Just tried earlier at tpe and the answer was no for a dirt cheap companion ticket unless I pay the change fee.

My experience differed as I arrived at PVG early twice for a KA flight in Apr and Nov 2013 and asked to get on an earlier CX one. Was flatly turned down. Was booked in I Class

My experience also.

Tried in June 2012 - me and another status-less mate on redeem tix, a second SL mate on saver fare.

TPE ticketing desk: Mr. Smith, you and your redeemed friend can go on the earlier flight for free. Your SL mate will have to pay HK$600.

I frequently do this for PVG/TPE>HKG flights and have never been charged. In fact I almost always book the latest flight and just show up at the airport when it is convenient for me.

I've had the same success as SL, GO, and DM.

I've been turned down a couple times when a flight was cancelled so others had to be moved (no seats available) or when I missed check-in cutoff by a few minutes for a given flight.

Never tried for a long-haul.

I would say it depends more or less on your status, route, and the agent. HKG agents tend to be a little more friendly compare to some out-ports. lastly, YMMV

I find it's very easy in Shanghai (where I always use AM tickets), they proactively asked last weekend if I wanted to get on the earlier flight (good, because it was the new KA interior with the full AVOD) and nodody has ever mentioned a change fee. In TPE I usually do turnarounds there and I find that when I arrive if I go to the gate of the next departing flight (because changing planes at TPE is so quick) and ask, the answer is often 'we did check and your ticket doesn't allow a change", which is fine, I have to sit in TPE or in HKG before my JFK flight anyway - again it's always an AM ticket to TPE and an I class out of TPE (the one I'm asking if I can change). But if I walk to the lounge and ask there, the answer is always yes (assuming there's space or likely to be space) and they just change my I class ticket so I guess it does depend on who you ask :-) But generally, very helpful.
