Thanks so much for the help everyone!
Also, do you think UA would have any issues granting a match/challenge from CX status?
And, what can I do to ensure that both me and my companion get an upgrade if I am matched?

Be on a single PNR and buy the highest fare class you are comfortable with.

From reading this thread, it seems like match/challenge requests get granted within a business day.
We're planning to do a AS MVP -> UA PS match, but it looks like our travel plans *might* mean that our return leg of the itinerary that should meet the challenge requirements will likely be a couple of days outside the 90 day window (i.e. ~2nd April - I'll aim to submit the challenge on Dec 31st, as our MVP expires the day - unless FTers suggest against it. Not sure if this is cutting it too fine..?)
Does anyone know if UA has exercised some kind of discretion in such situations?
I'd prefer just to stick with UA if it seems likely that we can get some kind of discretionary credit for the anticipated scenario above, if not, would we be able to book with UA and then switch credit to A3 at the gate?
Thanks in advance

Thanks for your help everyone!
I called mileage plus; they answered in a whopping 25 mins, and within 15 mins, they granted me status over the phone.
My online account is now reflecting premier platinum.
Now, I just hope I get the upgrades

Best to wait, if possible, to submit your challenge until 2-3 weeks prior to first UA qualified travel.
that can be done but since challenges are limited to once per 5 years, it would seem completing the challenge should be the focus.

Mrs Sofasurfer has BEAC Silver, which I am sure goes in to the new year; I'll double-check that is the case and will diarize her challenge application.

Unfortunately, it's hard to give you a blanket answer. It depends on route (hub-hub is harder), day of the week (midweek is easier), and time of the year.
I think as a plat I average about 80% on shorthaul (Express-like) flights, 60% on non-hub flights and closer to 20-30% on hub to hub flights.

I wonder if my upgrade chances are higher on the 1st because of the holiday?
and the 4th is a saturday so probably wont work out

Awesome thank you guys so much
I know that GS members clear 120 hours prior to departure (we are 120 hours prior to departure now), and i looked on the seat map on united.com, and the same number of seats are available in fc as were yesterday

So the lack of change can not be used to assuming a lack of elites for that time window.

I just checked the seatmap again as we've hit both the GS and 1k windows.
Nothing has changed since three days ago in FC.
I know you said they wouldn't clear at the windows, but im stills surprised, lol
Update: Upgrade cleared IAH-CLE!
