Four Season Resort Great Exuma Closing Doors

The title pretty much sums it up. I received word this morning that the Four Seasons Resort Great Exuma is closing its doors, effective May 26, 2009.

I will say that for a property that was in receivership, you would never have thought it from the generally good service and the upkeep of the hotel. I feel badly for the community, as the FS was a main plank of Exuma's attempts to develop as a high end tourist destination.

And doesn't it mean that for the rest of 2009, no FS in the Caribbean, as Nevis appears to be closed as well ?

Its ashame to hear this type of news and particularly in that Four Seasons is very weak in the carribean. There really is not a resort on the level of the ones in Hawaii or Punta Mita, Costa Rica, etc.

I guess I'll have to cross that resort off my list. I was hoping to travel there sometime this year.

It is a shame. Those two properties are the only 4Seasons I've been to and while Nevis had a more island feel and Great Exuma's employees really made me feel at home and forget the fact that the resort was not as lush as I had hoped, I did feel I got good value at both and would have gone back to either one given the opportunity.

Last I heard Nevis will reopen, and is still taking reservations for 11/1 and beyond. I am kind of shocked to hear Great Exuma is closing up.

Has anyone seen more recent news on Nevis? They seem to go through fits and starts.

After the Hurricane, I had to pull teeth to get my deposit back. The resort never sent me my money, but Corporate did send me a check much later. I wouldn't be surprised if the Nevis owners are in financial doo-doo. If this slowdown lasts much longer, I wouldn't be surprised if Nevis is stillborn.
What's the point of reopening w/ low occupancy?

That's really unfortunate to hear that the resort was not prompt in returning your deposit. I always feel that my money is relatively safe with a Four Seasons (no so much elsewhere).

seems like good news

The secured lender therefore took the decision to temporarily close the resort. Four Seasons has agreed to the orderly closure of the hotel on May 26. The staff will be dismissed over the following 30-day period. It is to be noted that a skeleton staff will be retained by the receivers through the transition period to new ownership.

It appears that Sandals have purchased the Exuma resort and plan to open it as the Sandals Resort Emerald Bay:
