BART Commuters Warned To Prepare For Potential Strike

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Bay Area transportation officials are urging residents to plan alternative methods of getting to and from work in the event of a strike by BART employees that could happen as soon as July 1.

A strike became a distinct possibility Tuesday with one union voting in favor of authorizing a strike if necessary. Another is scheduled to conclude voting Tuesday night.

Ninety-one percent of BART workers with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3993, which represents about 200 middle managers, voted in a secret ballot in favor of authorizing their union leaders to call for a strike if both sides do not come to an agreement at the conclusion of negotiation discussions at the end of this month.

Local 3993 president Jean Hamilton Tuesday said the vote is standard procedure as union leaders and BART management move forward in the negotiation process.

On the plus side, looks like the potential strike has been delayed by 9 days. Going to be awful to be on the freeways and bridges if they do :p

just a bump to note new date of July 9

gives them 11 more days to work it out.

allset2travel Jul 1, 2009 2:54 pm

Good to know. Need it to go to SFO before July 9.

Now seems that the earliest date of any strike would be July 13.

Let's hope it actually comes off. Then maybe bart workers will realize they are lucky to have cushy high paid jobs during a time of high unemployment. As opposed to the lowly paid taxi drivers without union benefits who will benefit from a strike.

On the minus side, I am sorry that it will inconvenience any visitors, not to mention commuters - no doubt post-strike ridership will suffer as some will decide they like driving.

So at this point the earliest possible strike is monday. They have set tomorrow as a negotiations deadline. If nothing gets worked out, they may give their 72-hour notice tomorrow.

http://bart.gov/news/articles/2009/news20090708.aspx says that management and union leaders have an agreement that needs to be voted on by union members.

Eastbay1K Jul 10, 2009 9:28 pm

It is FAR from an agreement. The union simply (apparently) walked out and are going to let the membership vote on the BART proposal, likely with a recommendation of NO.

Per SF Weekly and the Examiner

Even if tomorrow's vote is to reject the offer and strike, the earliest strike date would be sometime next week.

Uh-oh. I don't believe BART aren't going to be on strike. Let's hope the voting to be rejected to keep avoid strike or no strike. Whoever what happened the trains will be cause delayed or subject to be cancellion the trians service. This is finalization to be approved to get negotiable to get contract deal.

BART Union Roundly Rejects Proposed Contract

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Train operators and other members of the Amalgamated Transit Union overwhelmingly voted against accepting BART’s latest contract offer Tuesday night, leaving the possibility of a strike on the table.

At around 10:20 p.m., ATU president Jesse Hunt told KTVU that of the 76% of union members voting on the proposed contract, a full 100% rejected the offer.

Unions have promised to give "reasonable warning" of a strike

Not specified but 72 hours has been bandied abut as a time frame.

Boraxo Jul 15, 2009 10:39 pm

This is really not going to affect most tourists, particularly if you plan to stay within the city of SF or rent a vehicle for travel outside the city. The only major downside will be lack of public transit to OAK and SFO airports. In the case of SFO, you can get a pretty cheap supershuttle and cabs are @ $40 to downtown, so for a family of 4 you won't lose sleep. OAK is a bit more pricey from the city.

Of course there is also the traffic issue, the bridge to Oakland will be jammed pretty bad during rush hour (though traffic is usually lighter in the summers).

But compared with a tube strike in London or Paris, this won't be a big deal for tourists trying to navigate the sights in the city as most rarely use bart within the city.

At about 11:15 a.m., today, 7/31, BART and the 3 unions in negotiations announced a tentative agreement for a 4-year contract. The ratification process will take place during the next week. http://www.bart.gov/news/articles/20...20090714a.aspx
