Muni Transport App

Hi. Me again.

It looks like the easiest way to get around the city is to either walk or use a muni ticket. It looks like I can have 3 riders worth of tickets in the same app/wallet. Does anyone have experience of this? $13 a day each for unlimited travel seems reasonable or is there a better way of doing it?

I use the muni app when I plan to ride muni. I believe you can even include a cable car pass as part of the daily pass if desired. I do suggest screenshotting your tickets and sharing the screenshots with the travel partners so that if there’s any ticket inspector during the journey, you can just show screenshot instead of wasting battery power with the app.

Most people don’t use the muni app for all-day pass which is why it looks so cheap. Locals can use a monthly pass. Ridership is lower since pandemic.

From the Muni page, it seems that an active ticket in the app will display an animation, so if you encounter fare inspectors I'm guessing (no personal experience though) they will probably want to see that and not a screenshot.

Visitor pass is a great deal but I don't think you're limited to three

My understanding is that you can have up to three credit cards stored in the wallet to pay for the pass . The website doesn't indicate there are limits on the number of people on one device.

Can I use multiple tickets at the same time on my device for family and friends?
Yes, buying and using tickets for multiple riders on a single device is a great benefit of MuniMobile. For iOS devices, tap on the “Multiple Riders” toggle at the top of the screen in the “My Tickets” tab, and select the number and type of tickets needed for the group traveling with you. For Android devices, press and hold down on a ticket to select multiple tickets at once.

When using multiple tickets, the ticket that you display to the station agent, fare inspector, or proof of payment officer will show which types of tickets and the number of tickets used for the group.

Is your daughter one of the three riders? If she's under 19, Muni is free, with the exception of the cable cars. The cable car fare is $8.00 each way for adults and youth (ages 5-18). The one-day $13 "visitor passport" includes cable car; there are also three-day and seven-day versions.

Unless you are using the cable car every day of your trip then the MUNI pass is $5 for the day

If you do want to have a ride on the CC (just to say you've done it)t hen I suggest the California Line as it's a lot quieter than the Powell / Hyde route. You would need the $13 pass for the retuen trip for that but it would give you multiple rides that day. The Powell / Hyde is quieter early in the morning and in the evening if you did want to do that.

I am often amazed at the number of visitors I see paying $8 for a short hop on the CC and who seem to feel the ticket checker is trying to scam them when they suggest a day pass rather than a single ride!

BTW I've not noticed the MUNI app drain my phone battery.any more than any of the other apps I use.

So I bought the $5 ticket as there wasn't any need to use the Cable Car. Very good deal for what's essentially hop on hop off service for a whole day.

it’s a great deal even If it was costing 6quid. I feel that London Underground pass was similar in price in past years.
the muni app is very good.
I actually use Google maps when I’m considering public transportation because it includes other options such as Bart or just walking.
like the London Underground & bus system, there are times when going on foot can make more sense than motorized transit. I think that my extensive experience with Muni and living in Sf gave me the comfort with London travels. From 1991-2010 I always loved getting myself around in London.

thats the thing isnt it. Being able to navigate public transport, and by that I mean buses, isn't easy in any city I've visited. However, we got around just fine in SF with the help of the muni app.

I will be ripping my cell phone provider a new one on weds. My cell reception here has been shocking.

One weird bargain on this app…

If one wants to ride a cable car in San Francisco, it’s $8 cash on board for one way. It’s $8 on muni app. And for an all-day pass which includes the cable car, it’s $13 per day. Think it’s $31 for 3 days. That price is on the Muni app only. A paper all-day pass is $24 at shops.

We took the cable car 4 times within 90 minutes yesterday. So fun. $13 pp. if it was only $8 one way then maybe we’d take it maximum twice for $16. We were 5 people so $65 is cheaper than $80.

Just want to note that if you do buy single tickets you aren't charged within 90 minutes, as it counts as a "transfer". Still, the muni app is a good deal for short term passes.

If you're not sure how often you'll ride muni, or might come back to SF, I'm a fan of Clipper which is the bay area's reloadable transit card. It's easy to tap on, but no day/multi-day passes. There is a $3 fee for a new clipper card, but they've usually waived it recently for mobile cards.
