It's over
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Borders Group will liquidate its remaining assets after efforts to find a buyer fell through, the bookstore chain announced Monday.
The nation's second largest book seller, which filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year, currently operates 399 stores and employs approximately 10,700 workers. The liquidation process is expected to start as soon as Friday, pending bankruptcy court approval, Borders said in a press release. http://money.cnn.com/2011/07/18/news...s_liquidation/ |

According to two emails I received this morning, Borders WILL honor their gift cards during the liquidation sale, and will honor their Bonus Bucks (or whatever they are called) until July 31.
Sale starts today! |
We'll be heading over to our local Borders tonight to check it out. It'll be great to get some good deals, but a bummer to have the store closed. It was a favorite stop when we had extra time before dinner or seeing a movie.

Usually there aren't really great deals during liquidation sales. Just be aware than 40% off doesn't mean it's a great deal.

At the closing Borders I've observed, the markdowns usually start at 20%, give or take, and progress upwards (downwards?) as time passes, Filene's Basement-style. The ones I've actually observed have had slow deaths. There have been others I've seen from the outside that closed quickly, and probably didn't go through the above throes.
They're encouraging their e-book participants to migrate theirs to Kobo. Maybe this already is hereinabove, but I just got the email on 25 July. They offer this link, which doesn't take you all the way "home", but may be useful: http://www.borders.com/online/store/...id=SA_20110725 Borders, despite being the doomsayer that I have been here, you have been very very good to me. God bless all those employees. :(:(:(:(:( |
what is a good deal are the 40% off the magazines, I picked up two college football magazines for $10 but all magazines were 40% off
I was going to buy a couple of baseball books at 20% off but I'm going to gamble and wait that they will still be there in a couple of weeks at a bigger markdown I went to the IAD borders on my way out of town Monday and it was only 10% off max and not even on everything, I sure didn't stay there long |

Friday afternoon, I stopped by, saw the magazines were 40% off and all the books were 10-20% off. Literally 50 people in the check out line  Sunday afternoon, I stopped by to see if the percentages had changed. They had NOT. However, it looked like at least 30% of the inventory had been sold  I couldn't believe people rushed in to buy things with only 10-20% off, but they did (at least at my local store). Good luck tho! |

Exactly, because they've raised the prices back to original prices, so no discounts except for the % off. Likewise, up to 40% off doesn't mean everything is 40% off, just select items.
Borders.com still has fantastic deals on used books. |

1. No one knows how soon the store will close. Best to get in and buy something, anything, while it's still possible. 2. Some of us still have Borders gift cards to redeem. Best to get in and use them to purchase something, anything, while it's still possible. 3. The bonus bucks (or whatever) are only good through July 31. Best to get in and buy something, anything, while it's still possible to use them. @:-) |
All true points...but purchasing almost anything but magazines makes sense only if you have Borders Bucks/ Gift Cards to redeem.

Recently visited Borders in Santa Rosa, CA. Surprised to see how nearly fully stocked it was. May be the last one standing in the region, and so a depot from other Borders near and far. Also surprised that, while most sections had "25%" signs, the books I bought turned out to be 40% off at the register. ^
And again, while I've been playing the dirge here for months now, even as I've heard, "Oh, our store is very profitable; it's really because the landlords wouldn't negotiate with the ones that closed," ...Borders has been very very good to me, and I'm very sorry for the thousands of employees who aren't anymore. |
no inventory system, they got rid of their computers?!
I went to our remaining one in Silver Spring on Sunday looking for a few titles. But they couldn't tell me where in the store they might be, let alone whether they stocked the books, because they got rid of their computers when they went into liquidation?! And what's the big deal about 25% in a liquidation, when those sorts of discounts and greater ones were regularly available at Borders in the past?
