i need to call Alaska alot this summer. I did currently use onesuite.com, but they do not connect to Alaska, only the lower 48. Anyone know of a cheap calling plan?

Do you have a cell phone? My plan with SprintPCS includes long distance to all 50 states - so that would include Alaska. I have unlimited nights and weekends too, so I can make free calls to Alaska after 7pm EST and all weekend.
You may want to look to see what your cell phone plan offers.... p.s. - You may want to look into this as well... I noticed that you are located in Canada. How about signing up with http://www.vonage.ca For $20/month you get 500 mins. of calls to USA or Canada. Or, for $35/month you get unlmited calls! It works through your DSL or Cable modem service.... |
Vonage works great for cheap calling to the US and Canada. If it for only a short period there might be some start-up and cancellation charges that might not make it affordable. You can check out dsl reports VOIP forum about other VOIP providers:

As much as I like onesuite, in this case a calling card such as Sam's Club might be a better option. Onesuite call to Hawaii & Alaska are not a good deal based on the other options available. |
Are you calling the same number up there, or just places in Alaska? If it's the same number (family or whatever) consider getting a toll free on that number, it may be considerably less then other options.

I think this is pretty standard...I have USCellular and it also includes unlimited calls to anywhere in 50 states for no extra charges and also have 7pm-7am and all weekend for free. |

Skype
If you are calling someone with a computer, then try skype. It is a software programme that gives cystal clear calls over the internet. The other party must have skype installed on their computer as well. The computer rings just like a telephone, you answer and it is free.
go to www.skype.com I use it all the time. Not bad! |
CostCo has a prepaid calling card with MCI where all calls within the US - including Alaska - are 3.47 cents/minute.

I second the Costco Calling card. I love mine. All calls, especially international, are dirtcheap. Plus I can use it to call the US from Germany (had other calling cards before but they were more difficult to use).

Cheap call anywhere

1sttechnology - that card sounds interesting, but I just did some calculations of it versus the Costco calling card (which also has access via 800#'s)
If you spent $50/month on Costco calling cards @ $0.0347/min, you would have to make over 1440 mins (24 hours) worth of calls on it to break even versus the unlimited for $50.00. Some people may talk that much, but you really have to use the phone alot. Also, I'm not sure that that system you just outlined will work for Canada (the original poster is from Canada). I would still look at Vonage. For $46Canadian/month (the equiv. of $33.50 US$/month ) you can get not only unlimited calls to USA & Canada, but your monthly phone service as well (including caller-ID, 3 way calling, voice mail, call transfer, and more). |
