RyanAir to start TATL flights

RyanAir has announced that it will start TATL flights to a number of US destinations from Dublin and London Stansted within the year, with coach seats starting at GBP 8. They will offer business class as well.

Will EasyJet be far behind?

Jenbel Nov 12, 2008 1:50 am

Have they?

I thought that there was a pre-results discussion, but MOL actually said they had no firm plans on doing this when he gave the results. They are looking out for cheap planes though...

Is this definite now, or is it still just the pre-results gossip?

Is it April 1 again so soon? I sure hope so, because the idea of flying Ryanair TATL is just frightening.

Rambuster Nov 13, 2008 4:37 pm

They can fly all the TATL they want for all I care -without me anyway!
(I believe Sir Freddie Laker had a similar plan quite some time ago...)

Well Sir Freddie did right by me :)

Flew to London without having a return date .... all those years ago can't remember now if I bought a R/T or O/W. Do remember that I got my passport same day, went to the airport that evening and bought the ticket to fly that night :D

Ah, those were the days ......

Michael O'Leary meets US Officialdom

Should be an interesting deathmatch

Carolinian Nov 14, 2008 9:53 am

I am told that it was reported in the past few days on the BBC.

While I would likely opt for a different airline myself, I hope they crank up this service to keep price competition pressure on other airlines, given the growing ogopolistic situation

Always take reports of O'Leary's pronouncements with a pinch of salt, there certainly won't be anything 'within the year':

Michael has interesting ideas about how to run a high-class airline.

Sorry, but what does TATL stand for?

Don't worry...took me awhile to figure this out, especially as I think it was missing from the Flyertalk Glossary for awhile (I think I remember emailing FT and suggesting it be put in).

TATL = TransATLantic. No idea how this came about (I originally thought the ATL had something to do with Atlanta, and I've never seen anyone use a corresponding term like TPAC), but I've now seen it outside of FT and think it must be an industry term.

Welcome to FT! :D

TransATLantic, and TPAC of course TransPACific.

I'm not really sure they will launch the new company with TATL flights soon now. Even Ryanair has problems as most of the airlines do now and long-haul flights are a bit more tricky than short-haul.

I wonder if the U.S. destination will be some airport 100 miles outside of Fargo, N.D. The trip will cost GBP8, but the bus connection (bus service owned by Ryanair, of course) to the nearest city will be GBP400!
