Ryanair to go Trans-Atlantic

The thought of sitting in a Ryanair type of flight for 6 hours plus is scary to me. No thanks, I stick with AA (at least the seats recline).

With "the cheapest fare €10 ($12)", O'Leary expects the services, to secondary airports such as Baltimore, Providence in Rhode Island and New York Long Island Islip Macarthur "to be full". He expects sales of food, drink, duty-free goods and in-flight entertainment to be a major revenue earner. |
Oh sure, I mean they're bad enough short-haul. However I'm just wondering how much revenue they will generate from the extras? They sure as hell won't be making money on the ticket prices. Maybe a Ryanair TATL will break down like this
DUB-ISP Base fare return $35 Taxes fees etc $60 Checked baggage $10 per sector = $20 Priority seating (not available now but will probably be implemented) $15 per sector =$30 IFE Rental system $5 per sector = $10 IFE per movie $5 x 2 per sector (average) =$20 Main Meal $15 per sector = $30 Two alcoholic drinks $5 each per sector =$20 One Coca-Cola $3 per sector= $6 Pre-Landing meal/breakfast per sector $8= $16 Total cost of flight $247, thats a whopping $152 from the extras alone, and that is only a flight to ISP. If they flew to the Bay Area, double all the food/beverage and IFE extras! Not bad, but my figures maybe are way off. One thing I forgot to factor in, cost of getting from ISP to downtown NY by taxi $75 + tip! |
I will never fly Ryanair since I expect these "extras" to be included in the cost of my ticket. Depending on how much they charge for extras, it could end up costing more to fly them versus another carrier.

I would think RyanAir would begin a coach service to Manhattan or offer their own shuttle service to the Ronkonkoma train station. I'd pay $100-$150 each way for a trans-atlantic flight happily...even if on an airline similar to Ryanair. |

AFAIK most coach services out of ISP charge about $30 one way to New York, the train though is a lot cheaper but involves a shuttle/transit connection. I don't know how we got on to ISP however if I were a low fares airline ISP as a NY destination would make a lot of sense. |

TATL to ISP? The last time I checked, they don't even fly non-stop transcon from ISP. I'm sure that if they could than current airlines flying in and out of that airport (Southwest, NW, Delta and Continental) would have applied for such service years ago. I wonder if the runways are even long enough to handle a fully loaded 787s or A350. ISP has always been, at best, more of a regional airport for those wishing to travel to points in Eastern Nassau and all of Suffolk County. But if you wish to sit on a bus or in some van service on the Long Island Expressway during rush hour headed towards Manhattan or drag your luggage on the LIRR with limited (read little or none) space for your luggage, be my guest. If it can be done inexpensively, rest assured that I'll join the throng headed across the pond - and I live less than 20 minutes away from JFK

I can't recall whether I've flown Ryanair, but I've flown several low cost carriers and the ticket/surcharge/on-board expense combo is rarely an issue. Even with all the extra fees, Ryanair is often the cheapest option. Look at London to Aarhus, for example, with tickets purchased months in advance.
If it weren't for this liquid ban issue, I would probably fly Ryanair with almost zero extra costs. IFE is no big deal to me - I would prefer to read books or magazines. I doubt Ryanair would be much, if any, worse than Air Transat. They seemed comparable to me when I've flown them. |
I'd gouge my eyes out before I'd take a FR long-haul flight. Heck, probably even before I'd hop on FR again for another short hop wholly within Europe. Made the mistake once before; never again. FR is dreadful at any price.

I love it!!! I've flown Ryan Air many, many times in Europe and I have absolutely zero problems w/ the issues that everyone is complaining about here.
Sure the 29" seat pitch sucks for someone over 6' tall like me, but on Trans-Atlantic flights I do lots of walking around anyway (and I'm sure they'll have a different seating configuration than they do for their intra-EU flights). Also, I couldn't care less about IFE whatsoever. Even on aircraft that has TV's on the seat back in front of me I rarely use it. I use long flights as a chance to catch up on the many unread books that are sitting around my place or to listen to music on my MP3 player. Believe me, ALL of these flights will be sell-outs. Most pax want the cheapest price ~ period. |
