I wonder if the runways are even long enough to handle a fully loaded 787s or A350. ISP has always been, at best, more of a regional airport for those wishing to travel to points in Eastern Nassau and all of Suffolk County. But if you wish to sit on a bus or in some van service on the Long Island Expressway during rush hour headed towards Manhattan or drag your luggage on the LIRR with limited (read little or none) space for your luggage, be my guest. If it can be done inexpensively, rest assured that I'll join the throng headed across the pond - and I live less than 20 minutes away from JFK

NW is due to start BDL-AMS soon if it alreadty hasn't started it.

FYI, NW is already taking reservations for R/T BDL-AMS. Oh....the outbound flights are BDL-DTW-AMS and the return flights are via either DTW or EWR at around $1200+.:td: :td:

Put Me Down as an Admirer of Ryanair

I for one would love to see a daily BWI-STN flight.

I wonder if the Ryanair execs are looking at this story with interest? ;)

Im sure that there is a market for Ryan Air othewise they wouldnt be doing it. But Im not sure I or any of my employees would want to get nickle and dimed to death on a transatlantic flight.

The will fill the airplanes, and that is a great thing.

It will only free up more room in Y on the mainline carriers and force them to continue to differentiate themselves.

This can only help the frequent travelers. ^

Yes, they will be. Or at least I can assume they'll be, but you won't catch a lot of FTers on those any time soon. But they'll still be full. There's a lot of people out here who will take it simply because the cheapest flight is always the best option, right? These are the people who are still telling me about this news with "I bet you're happy to hear about that, so?" and then being surprised when I say no, and have to explain that cost isn't always the only factor to consider on a flight. For a lot of their customer base it's still completely foreign territory to imagine paying more just to fly on airline X instead of airline Y, and I bet there's enough of those people out there to make a go of it.

Not to say I'm not looking forward to it. It might mean a couple really crazy deals for a weekend trip on a full-service airline. Or it might make no difference whatsoever to a lot of FT patterns. It won't make a lot of difference to mine.

O'Leary vs US rules should be an interesting Deathmatch - I do hope that Bangor is going to be a Ryanair airport

I wonder if Providence or Islip are "international" airports that can handle 400 pax aircraft going through customs/immigration?
Also, i wonder if these birds will have try tables again as they going to offer meals for purchase. And i guess the Ryanair pay scale violates the US minimum wage laws!

I for one will try it once, european travel is great, basic but great. On the whole no delays, luggage always arrives and staff are friendly. Lets see what happens.

yeah if they are really going to fly to BWI they could make a killing - tons of demand for cheap flights in DC

LOL - check out http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/ryan.htm to get a feel of what other people flying this joke of an airline experience in Europe - agree though with one of the other comments - this will make "normal" planes emptier and thus gives more opportunities for special fares - however this might also easily lead to a downward spiral in service as it has on intra-European flights where so-called "full service" airlines do not put it beyond them to cut service to non-existent levels (LX, IB as good, or rather bad, examples):td:

Was it last year when NWA tried Rockford, IL. to Paris route? They got tons of money from the Rockford airport people to start this routing (something similar to what you describe, through Detroit) and that lasted ohh, few weeks, maybe few months at best.

Many flights cancelled due to lack of passengers. The few that were booked on these cancelled flights were screwed and most were once a year leisure passengers that saved their pennies and really were looking forward to a week or 2 Paris/European vacation. At that point they had to either wait until the next day or drive to ORD, missing 1 of the very few vacation days they had.

It wasn't pretty..........

It wasn't NW on the BDL-CDG route. NW did get a nice subsidy to start the BDL-AMS route, though...
